Reg Evans Posted March 20, 2009 Report Posted March 20, 2009 This is on the subject of Hard To Start cars after they have sat for a few days. For many years I've struggled with starting my cars after they have sat idle for a few days. I could spin the engine over and over continuously while fluttering the gas pedal until the battery died trying to get gas back up to the carb. So....instead of draining the battery I kept a squirt bottle of gas on hand and opened the hood and primed the carb before even attempting to start the engine on any of my cars. Last year Don mentioned on one of the Hard To Start threads that he would hit the starter for a few revs.....wait for a few seconds and do it again.....wait for a few more seconds and do it again....repeat this a few more times and varoom his car would start. I have to admit I was a bit skeptical but I tried it the other day on my old 35 Dodge and by gosh by golly, it started !!!!! So, I went around the garage repeating this procedure with my other cars and it worked with them too !!!! Sooooooo Don. Thanks for the tip! This old dog learned a new trick. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted March 20, 2009 Report Posted March 20, 2009 But be careful---don't hurt your arm. Quote
Don Coatney Posted March 20, 2009 Report Posted March 20, 2009 Reg; Glad it worked for you. Made me feel good hearing your story:) Quote
55 Fargo Posted March 21, 2009 Report Posted March 21, 2009 Reg and Don, just went outside to start engine and give this method a try. Engine hasn't been started in close to a week, try this method, started no problem. Another backslap for Don..... Quote
Brendan D25 Posted March 22, 2009 Report Posted March 22, 2009 With this " Coatney ":) starting method do you pump the gas pedal? In the winter I usually run the Dodge at least once a month and I go through about four or five of these cycles, pumping the gas pedal about five times then crank for about 30 seconds before it starts. Next fine day I will try this method. Thanks, Brendan. Quote

Don Coatney Posted March 22, 2009 Report Posted March 22, 2009 Norm; Where did you get a picture of Tim Adams grandfathers original hammer? This is the real deal. Of course the handle has been replaced 3 times and the head twice but other than that it is all original. Quote
