It's really hard to tell just from pictures. I would want to see it in person to make sure the sheet metal is as good as it looks. Plus, the chassis to make sure it's not shot. If the sheet metal on the body is in decent shape for cleaning up and repainting and the frame is good, I'd say it may be worth it. Floors aren't that hard to repair. You usually don't get much for $5,000 to $6,000 when it comes to convertibles. They all usually need a lot of work to bring them back.

Well convertibles it seems command much more resale value than fixed top vehicles. I guess that means you might get back your purchase price plus what you will spend if you're lucky. Decent running ones seem to bring 5 figures consistantly.

On they other hand their paarts are hard to come by and more costly to procure. Yours seems to have it major parts, tops are easy to find, top mechanisims arent, upholstery can be done.

In any case you have come to a good resource, go to the main page which hosts this forum and read all the stuff there, most of it will apply mechanincly to your 49.

Have fun.

I agree that it looks pretty decent but buyer beware. Make sure you check it out before buying or you could be getting a lot more than you bargained for.....or less. If as decent as it shows probably a reasonable price but not a bargain.

frame and sheet metal are your #1 considerations..motor and mechanicals are a snap to re-do.

anyway...at this level a $1000.00 mistake in original price is nothing compared to the final value...

its kind of.....if oyu want it...and can do the work...get it, its affordable,

but...if you cant do the work..wait and get one done or nearly done, and just ride and shine it!

whatever,... you will always get your money back with a c'vert..AS PLEASURE, or as RE-SALE.

claybill, you surprise me. I thought you would be all over this one like a teenage boy with a willing girlfriend.:P Your collection of old tin convertibles needs this added to it. I know you don't have enough so why not a '49?

I was looking to pick up a 49 Ply Conv for several years. For about 10 grand more you get get one that's ready to roll that just needs a few tune ups and maybe a top that's 10-15 years old. For an extra 3 grand you can get one that's trouble free. If you're looking for a project, that one looks like a good candidate, but not really much of a bargain. About a year and a half ago there was one on ebay that went for 9 grand that was in much better shape. The one listed on craigslist was on ebay a few months ago, forgot how high the bidding got(not very though). Needless to say, you could probably get the seller down a bit, since its been sitting awhile.

Things that are convertible specific are chrome trunk hinges, visors, and top clamp posts. I think most everything else is swappable with 2 doors and such. Rear seats, and maybe fronts are different (not sure how the 2 door seats fold back. Top motors can be found through kanter and rods through andy baurnbaum. I personaly love convertibles, and the 49 Mopar convertible is my favorite design of any convertible car. So if I was you and I wanted a "project car," was really handy, had patience, was thorough, and could get the seller down a grand or two, I would go for it! Let us know what you decide! :D
