claybill Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 last month i posted a memo that my krylon paint was runny and dripped excessively....i returned it to KRYLON CO. and got new FREE cans DIFFERENT PAINT BATCH..SAME RESULTS. most of you thought my spray technique was off, or the nozzle was clogged ,or your experience was better or..etc etc... well..i bought and used the rustoleum and BAM! it went right on!..no runs, no drips, no errors, several thin coats, down in my basement, etc. etc..the same as i have been rattlecan painting for 30 years. there is a difference between those 2 products..rustoleum wins by a mile!!! by the way...when i picked up the rustoleum can it took several shakes to get the rattle ball free. as i claimed previously, that could be the best test! bill Quote
Normspeed Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 Thanks for that tip Bill. I've been using Rustoleum and Krylon both, in satin black recently. The Krylon has been going on good. It might be a different Krylon than yours, I notice Krylon has diversified their products to cover all kinds of specialty uses. This variety came with a sort of tapered plastic lid, like a truncated conehead:) Quote
claybill Posted February 9, 2009 Author Report Posted February 9, 2009 yep...same top on can. I wonder if krylon markets a different quality for sale in walmart/kmart type stores.? when i called krylon they asked me for the batch## and store where i bought it...??? i know john deere, homelite, black and decker etc.. etc products are made differently for sale in the economy stores. i had a homelite weed whacker i bought from menards and took it to a local shop for repairs and when he saw the model number he gave it back and said some parts are not available or not up to the standard of the regular product as they usually are throw away items when broken. i wonder, i wonder, i wonder.... bill Quote
Young Ed Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 Bill that could be. I buy Krylon at the hardware store all the time and it goes on great. Not many on here have seen my old truck in person but there are parts of it I painted with krylon Quote
Normspeed Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 I think they want the codes and store info so they might check to see if it's really old stock. I recall buying some cans of spray paint from Kmart once that were so old that the propellant was gone. I returned them for a refund, but a week or so later I was surprised to see some of the cans back on the shelf! I could tell because some cans had fresh paint on the outside where I had tried to use them and they just spritzed paint down the side of the can. Quote

They may have the manufacturer change one or two things on their products to make them different than the others. Then when it needs repair, like Sears, you can only go to Menards to get a replacement part (or order the parts through them). Then the regular repair places don't want to repair the item. That's why I don't buy expensive tools from Menards or Sears anymore. Sort of like the new snow blower I bought last Spring. I could have bought about the same size blower from Menards for about $100 less. But........instead I bought an Ariens blower from an Ariens dealership that also has a parts and service department nearby. Good thing I spent the extra money too. About the 5th time I used the blower the first part of December the hook on the auger cable broke. I called the dealer I bought it from and ask if they had any in stock. He checked and said no. But.......bring the cable out and they would take one from a new blower they had in stock and replace it for me right away. Two hours later I was back home with the new cable installed on the blower, and ready to go again. You won't get that kind of result from Sears or Menards. You'd have to order the part either through Sears or MTD (for Menards) and then wait for them to ship it to you. Krylon probably wanted the lot numbers to check to see how old your paint was. With the lot number they could tell when they shipped it to Kmart, etc. and when it was made. Some stores don't sell as much paint as others. If a lot or batch of paint was bad, they would have had complaints from other stores that had sold it. Keep in mind a paint company doesn't make one can or one gallon of paint at a time. They make it in 300 to 500 gallon batches. Now, consider you can package 36, 16 oz. cans from one gallon of paint and that's a lot of cans of paint, just from that one batch. If it was a bad batch, they would have had lots of complaints from a lot of stores where it was purchased. If they didn't, it means the consumer probably kept it too long or improperly stored it, or the store where it was purchased did. Quote
Young Ed Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 Norm we've got quite a few MTD items and they are all great. Never any problems with replacement parts. Also you can usually find the yard man equivalent part. We upgraded dads MTD yard edger to do along the curb with a kit for a yard man machine. If your Ariens has the same design as my grandmas make sure you do the maintenence. Grandpa never did it and eventually the gear box went dry and he had never greased the auger shafts to they needed to be replaced too. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 Ed, They tell you to grease those fittings in the instruction book. I haven't touched anything except to put that new cable on as yet. I paid the dealer to set it up so it was ready to go, then had them haul it out to the house when I bought it. This is the first season I've used it. When I put it away this spring, I'll do the maintenance on it prior to putting it away. Since mine is newer than your grandfathers, it probably is a different design, but.......you still gotta keep them lubed up. I really like the thing. With those six forward gears and two reverse gears, along with the throttle/speed control, that thing just flies through deep wet snow with no effort at all. I even took it across the street to knock out a pile the city snow plow piled in front of our mail boxes. That stack had to be about 4 feet deep, about 15 or 20 feet long and 3 foot wide full of ice and snow. I cleaned it all out of there in no time and didn't even get winded. Quote
Young Ed Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 Sounds similar if you have those fittings too. My intention with the post was just don't ignore them or you'll be sorry Every season we pull the shear pins put some grease in the fittings and give the 2 augers a spin. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 I don't know if it means anything, but a while back an employee in the paint dept at a local WalMart made a comment about Krylon paint now being different in some manner. He did not elaborate, but I took his comment to be a negative about the product. Quote
claybill Posted February 9, 2009 Author Report Posted February 9, 2009 when krylon first came out i was in the hobby of restoring old balloon tire type bicycles..krylon was a miracle paint. it worked upside down recoat n 3 minutes it was great...now the damn rattle ball doesnt get stuck after sitting for a day or a week or a month..somethng wrong here!! what is the concept? they tell you to shake and shake for a reason..if the ball isnt stickin'...???!!! plain as day to me. bill Quote
rolliejoe Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 I've noticed krylon is not the same also. Used to go on great and would lay out really nice. Now it seems just as inferior as rustoleum used to be. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 Probably one of those multi-millionaire top executives decided the paint should be thinner......but the price should remain the same.....thereby making the company a bunch more money -- which they can use to increase his salary. (Makes as much sense as anything.) (Just my personal opinion, of course.) Quote
rolliejoe Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 I agree Bob. At my work there's a lot of "chiefs" that come and go. All of them striving to come up with "great ideas" to justify their high paying elitist jobs, or to shortcut their way to that illustrious position. btw, krylon sucks now! Quote
maurice wade Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 Not sure on the spelling, if you can find this brand, give it a try. This paint covers quite well, and gives a very nice shine. The spray nossle is also different from the other spray paints which makes for easier application. Quote
Brendan D25 Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 Maurice, would it be Plasti-Coat? It seems I have seen that paint somewhere, maybe Wal-Mart or building supply. Brendan. Quote
claybill Posted February 12, 2009 Author Report Posted February 12, 2009 plasti-cote? auto supply stores have it. made to cover over any paint. bill Quote
