42PlyDeluxe Posted February 6, 2009 Report Posted February 6, 2009 Any ideas on how to remove some rust that has formed on my 42's stainless grill? Ive tried baking soda.. Naval Jelly.. Green Dragon. Mothers Polish.. Ketchup.. EAsy off oven cleaner... yelling at it... So far nothing has seemed to work... Quote
Young Ed Posted February 6, 2009 Report Posted February 6, 2009 The guy in our club that does stainless a little told me the first step to polish it was to sand it with some 220. So try some sandpaper Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted February 6, 2009 Report Posted February 6, 2009 Stainless does not rust, so that is just surface rust on there that's run off the body of the car. The best and safest way I've found to clean rust off stainless parts is a good fresh soapy SOS pad with lots of water. Just rub gently and all the rust will come off and you won't have any scratches in the stainless finish. You won't even have to polish it afterward. It will be nice and bright and shinny, like new again. Key is, lots of water and don't scrub hard. Make sure the pad is fresh and soaked good with water and soap. Once the soap starts to go out of the pad, get a fresh pad. AND REMEMBER, RUB GENTLY. By the way, it also works just as good on chrome parts that only have surface scratches and rust on them. Takes the scratches right out. Quote
grey beard Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 Norm is right - stainless does not rust. If the piece is actually rusting, it's not stainless. People who repair stainless will do their repair work, then sand the stainless with progressively finer sand paper until it is smooth enough to buff on a wheel using buffing compound. It is a slow and difficult process to go from 220 grit paper to a fine stainless shine - lots of work involved. JMHO Good Luck Quote
Mark Haymond Posted February 15, 2009 Report Posted February 15, 2009 Instead of the coarse 220 paper try grade 0000 steel wool. That has worked for me. The 0000 grade is gentle, so you can rub hard without having to worry about putting scratches in the surface. Quote
kevinanderson Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 Try putting a little polishing compound on your steel wool also. Quote
james49ply Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 I just tried this today, CLR, took the rust right off! use soft cloth, wet with CLR and wipe, rust-- GONE!! Quote
LuckyDevil Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 I have used FAST ORANGE hand cleaner with pumice. The solvent helps lift the rust away, yet the pumice is just rough enough to get the big pieces off. After that, just use a little 0000 steel wool and it will clean right up. You can also use the steel wool on glass and other trim pieces to get rid of the hazy look or paint overspray. Quote
