PodSquad48 Posted January 5, 2009 Report Posted January 5, 2009 Hello to all you fellow flathead freaks. Just wanted to compliment you guys on your great website, I've had my car a few months now and this site has been a great help. After 2 Challengers, a 64 D100, and a 65 Valiant, I recently purchased a 48 P15, 2 door club coupe. The car has sat idle in a garage since 1978 and the after much attention Ive got the ol gal fired up. Next step is the brakes. I've got a reliability run with some pals coming up in May and with any luck Im hoping to be ready. Again, great website... Im glad to see so many people dedicated to these cars! -Steve Quote
randroid Posted January 5, 2009 Report Posted January 5, 2009 Steve, Welcome to the forum! Since you've followed the forum for a while it's probably too late for you to flee with whatever sanity you might have left, so I guess it's time for you to hunker-down and enjoy the ride. There have been some interesting and informative threads on brakes lately. Have you done a search yet? I'll be doing my brakes next summer and now have a comprehensive checklist ready, plus I know what pitfalls to expect, but I also know I''ll be asking a lot of questions once I get started. Again, welcome. -Randy Quote
PodSquad48 Posted January 5, 2009 Author Report Posted January 5, 2009 Thanks, Ive reviewed some of the brake jobs here, and it looks like Kanter or Andy Bernbaum is the best source for parts. Looks like the M/C and wheel cyls. alone are going to run me $300-350! I'll post my brake trials and tribulations when Im done! Quote
oldmopar Posted January 5, 2009 Report Posted January 5, 2009 You may want to check rockauto that is where I got the wheel cylinders for my P15 they also have rebuild kits if you cylinders are not pitted or can be honed. I replaced the wheel cylinders and rebuilt the mc also do not forget to replace the 3 brake hoses. If you do use rockauto here is a 5% discount code that is good until Feb 8 2009 13251581140784 Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 5, 2009 Report Posted January 5, 2009 I just bought two rear wheel cylinders (new) for a 47 P15 at O'Reilly Auto Supply for $21.95 each (plus tax). I also bought the 4 front cylinders at a cost of 90-some dollars (close to $100). I think these are made in China, but many things are nowadays.....so you might get the same item from the places you mentioned. I didn't ask them about brake linings however. You can have your old shoes re-lined if you have a local shop who does clutches, brakes, etc. Oh, and Welcome. Nice looking coupe with a little patina. Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 Often you can have your master cylinder sleeved with brass or stainless and then put a kit in it , cheaper than a new one . Your end product will be longer lasting too . Quote
hkestes41 Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 You can also do a front disc brake conversion using a kit from various manufacturers for about $500. One of our members Olddaddy sells the kits. http://www.rustyhope.com/index.html Quote
PodSquad48 Posted January 14, 2009 Author Report Posted January 14, 2009 Getting ready to just purchase a new M/C instead of trying the rebuild route. Before I do, has anyone found a "dual" or "tandem" master cylinder that will work on our cars. It sure would be nice to have one that would accomodate the pedals. I know Wilwood and other aftermarkets are out there... though I dont want to have fab brackets and use new pedal assemblies. Any help is appreciated! Quote
greg g Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 Gut the bottom portion of the current MC, mount the new one to the frame behind it on premade brackets ( I have want looks like late 80's MOPAR in my Studebaker Truck Frame speedway and other have the brackets) with the new MC located and mounted, fabricate a new longer actuator rod to pass through the lower part of the old one to connect tot he new one. Kind cobby but it retains the pedal archetecture ad engineering. You should be able to get rod and clevis ends from street rod supply houses. Quote

It's set up for front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. Supposed to be a direct bolt in. http://www.ecihotrodbrakes.com/index.html Quote
