Why is such a table called a coffee table? Who and why did someone invent such a name? Why not a doiley table, or a magazine table, or a cocktail table, or better yet a foot stool? Another question. How many here use a "saucer" (who and why is such a device called a saucer?) under there coffee cup. I figgure Norms Coupe is the only one here who uses a saucer:rolleyes:

And who and why did someone invent the name "coaster" for the device you set your tumbler on. And who and why did someone start calling a drinking glass a tumbler?

Don't get me wrong. I love the idea, but wouldn't a Ford flathead V-8 be more correct with that radio. Maybe an early Hemi?

At my house, we toss our magasines, books, and mail on a couple of old trunks. We also use the trunks for storage. When company comes we clear them off so that they might set drinks there. Coasters work well to balance the glasses between the trunk slats.

Here's another thought. With a glass-top table, wouldn't old glass ash trays work well for coasters?
