55 Fargo Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 Hi, is there anything that can be used on the fender and body of the car before installing the fender welting to help eliminate moisture from collecting in this area. I was thinking a thin coating of 3M Drip Chek, applied might help to keep water and moisture from sitting along the seam, and causing rust to begin. Any ideas or suggestions appreciated..........Fred Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 Fred..good application of top coat is all that is needed to protect the metal..if you wish, small discs of cork can be placed around the bolt areas and just gently snug the fenders in place till you are ready to install the welting Quote

Speaking of washing collector cars, do most guys avoid the high pressure wand washing, and just go with a hand wash with pail of soap and water..........Thanx Fred Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 soap? clear water rinse with soft cloth only on my Tiger..it was 12 years before it got its first wax job..now this car never sits out of doors.. Quote
oldmopar Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 I was looking at a old magazine last night (sciences and mechanics april 58) and they had a article on how to keep your car from rusting here is the tip they had for fender welting Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 great info, most is already impregnated, not sure you can find FABRIC fender welt with a BEAD..the most is vinyl clad and then if you should go with the SS trim, it is affixed to a rubber medium..I think that Carpenter Ford parts dealer has the better price on the SS beaded molding..comes in 8 foot lenthgs.. 55 Fargo Posted November 25, 2008 Author Report Posted November 25, 2008 I cut, notched and mde up the fenderwelting this afternoon, while my 2 1/2 YO daughter slept on the couch of our lower level rec room. I brought the fender in from the garage, the primer is dry to the touch, but brought in the house to cure faster at 70 plus degrees, it is laying on the foozball table. I employed the Young Ed method, clothes pins, cut notches and slots, it's now ready when I re-install the fender. I can try it for size on the car, then remove till my paint is finished, or pull it just before painting the car. I used the cheaper vinyl stuff, maybe some day in the far away future, I can install stainless welting...............Fred Quote
