Bingster Posted November 2, 2008 Report Posted November 2, 2008 Would it be better to have Steele re-vulcanize my old upper and lower control arm bumper cores for my Desoto or but NOS bumpers from somebody like Mitchell? Seems to me that rubber that old would be brittle like the disintegrated ones I am replacing. Quote
Olddaddy Posted November 2, 2008 Report Posted November 2, 2008 In general, nos rubber that is 50-60 years old will be hard as a rock and break down quickly. The aftermarket bumpers are pretty weak. I had one fall apart in my hand when I twisted it to see how strong it was, and I'm not so strong myself. You might try sending your to Metal Rubber corp, Dave Kruse for reproduction. He's done a lot of stuff for me and his work is excellent, krusn64@aol.com. Quote
James_Douglas Posted November 3, 2008 Report Posted November 3, 2008 What year car ? Many MOPARS of the 40's and early 50's did NOT have any rubber in the control arms, but were of the threaded and greased type... James Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted November 3, 2008 Report Posted November 3, 2008 I am thinking Bingster meant to say "cones" and not "cores" in his original message...these are pretty much interchangable between many makes and years as you need only to watch for the height and mounting stud size in fitting an alternative...I find they really only get damaged when the chassis sits about without an engine in the compartment thus putting undue pressure for an extensive amount of time contorting or flat out damaging them beyond use...
