Nate Goodman Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Hi folks, heres a question for all you: what would cause my stock 48 plymouth to run perfectly fine at idle, but as soon as you step on the gas, it starts to miss intermittently. The engine does rev up, but it just starts running really rough, sputtering and generally real un-happy sounding. Points? Vacuum advance? accelerator pump? any ideas? thanks. Nate Quote
Normspeed Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Points, vac advance would be good items to check. Also the plug wires and plugs. Make sure the wires are firmly snapped into the distrib cap. Make sure the choke is opening. Is it something that just came up or has it generally been doing that for a while? Quote
old woolie Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 I've had condensers cause these symptoms. Not on my 51 but on old farm tractors. Quote
claybill Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 i would check everything connected to plugs and plug wires. its free and easy to check, and frequently causes a miss at 'load'. bill Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 the quick check for condenser..if it idles fine...revs without probs but falls flat on its face under load is to check for blueish looking burnt point contacts.. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 When mine did that, it was because the vaccuum advance moved the breaker plate and shorted that little wire from the points against the housing. Odd, but check it anyway, won't cost you to look. Quote
Powerhouse Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 sounds like your vacuum sucks...uh..in a bad way i mean. Check your timing for sure...do it by ear at fast rpms... Quote
Tim Frank Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 I've had condensers cause these symptoms. Not on my 51 but on old farm tractors. Me too. Had a number of British cars and Joe Lucas condensors were notorious. Quote
Nate Goodman Posted October 21, 2008 Author Report Posted October 21, 2008 It used to miss a little when warming up, but then it was fine. this is a new development-Thanks for all the suggestions. Nate Quote
