ChrisCoccia Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 My glove box lid was destroyed by rust when I bought my truck so I bought a clean solid one on e-bay that still had the spring on it. Now that I am starting to put things back together, I noticed that the hinge moves but the spring is really stiff. I tried attatching it and it sticks out an inch and a half, and if I try any harder to open it I think I will bend the mounting flange on the dash. Is there some secret here or did I buy a dud? Quote
MBF Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 I think the spring may be weakened. The previous owner of my truck put a cabinet door type magnet inside the door to keep it from vibrating partially open. Works for me! Mike Quote
Merle Coggins Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 How are you connecting the spring? Is it still springy? If connected properly it should hold the door closed with only a little tension, If you door won't close with the spring on it, then something is wrong. Or if it won't open, then something is wrong. Here's a couple of pictures of the glove box door, and spring, on my parts truck. Merle Quote
MBF Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 My spring is connected the same way, and I just found another one in a parts truck I was cannibalizing earlier this summer. I cleaned it up and put it on the shelf for when the one in my truck gives up and breaks. I'm sure the spring has been weakened by age so the magnet works for me as an assist. My cab is a '49, so at 60 yrs old, I expect a little wear and sag-just like me, but I'm not there yet! Mike Quote
Young Ed Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Does Roberts not carry new springs for the pilot house trucks? They are available for my 46. Quote

ChrisCoccia Posted October 16, 2008 Author Report Posted October 16, 2008 My spring doesn't seem weak-it doesnt want to move at all-totally stiff. The door won't move in or out, but the hinge moves fine. I was going to take a picture but I haven't had a chance. Quote
