Norm's Coupe Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 and who has the parts now? enough said... But Tim, if you don't really need the parts, who really cares who has them. Used radiators and horns are all over the place. I have an extra set of horns hanging on the garage wall that work. Radiators are out there too if one just looks for one. As for the hubcaps. Well..........from the sound of it you go to some big swap meets. I haven't been to a small or big swap meet where there hasn't been hubcaps for just about any car you want, laying all over the ground in booths, or stacked in boxes. I'm sure you've seen the same thing. I'm like Bob. Don't have all that storage room to start with. Then to put out $450 for parts you don't need and just have it sit there in hopes someone may want the parts, you could end up dieing with them. Now, if I bought a car like that for $450 I'd want to get that, plus my labor and hauling expenses. Labor includes the cost of hauling the car, removing the part and packing it up for shipping. So...........figuring it would take me an hour or more to remove the fender, then pack it up to ship, and haul it to the shipping point, I'd be charging something like $150 to $200 for that front fender. Would you pay that for a fender that is full of rust like that one. If I restored it to look good with some primer, I'd have to charge about $400 to $500. Would you pay that? Probably not and I'd be stuck with it, so you see it's not worth the time involved. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Hubcaps (assuming full set of 4) horns (two) and radiator for 25.00...nothing personal but that was an insult to any person..regardless of the need or your abiltiy to provide storage...sorry but I feel I have to speak the truth here Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted October 9, 2008 Author Report Posted October 9, 2008 I asked how much he would take for the items.....he would not say, but asked how much I would give. Said to make him an offer, he wouldn't be offended......and could simply say no thanks. So I told him all I had on me to spend at the moment was $25. He said "sorry, that won't do." So I said, no problem, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Thanked him for showing me the car, and went on my way. I'm not real fond of guys who want me to make an offer.....my thought is that they hope I'll offer more than the item is worth, and, of course, they'll be happy. If I had Really needed any of those items, I'd have offered more. Then I'd have had to set a time to come back for the item and pay, since I didn't have but $25 at that moment. I told the seller I would not be a buyer for the car to start with, that I just wanted to look and see what it had left to offer, that I know others who might be interested in some parts, were they available at a reasonable price........meaning perhaps some of the participants here. So, I would pay more than I offered, but that was all I could or would do at the moment. At the same time.......the radiator would have to be cleaned and checked if I wanted to use it......at a cost of at least $65 (just had one gone thru lately); the horns, assuming they worked and I wanted to use them, would need a different bracket to mount on a Plymouth, plus a horn relay to operate them. The wheel covers would need to be sanded and the white repainted in order to be used since the white area was total rust on all four of them. Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Bob; If you can grab that full flow oil filter sitting on top of the engine for peanuts you can sell it on the bay and make a few bucks. There are always some folks looking for one of these. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted October 9, 2008 Author Report Posted October 9, 2008 I guess the same deal would apply on that......seller would ask for an offer, and I would probbly not offer enough. I thought that might be the full flow type. Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 I guess the same deal would apply on that......seller would ask for an offer, and I would probbly not offer enough. I thought that might be the full flow type. Offer five bucks as is, or have him clean it and offer ten bucks. Quote
old woolie Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Anytime someone say's to me '"make me an offer",I always say"I can't buy it and sell it too". If you want to sell something put a price on it. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Tim, If you're talking ebay prices, then I would agree on the hubcaps, might even be more than $25 for a set of 4. However, the hubcaps on my coupe when I bought it were not very good, dented, etc. So..........whenever I went to a swap meet I would look for them. I got the whole set of 5 (one for spare) at the swap meets. I did not buy the whole set at once, primarily because I couldn't find a decent complete set. So, bought them one or two at a time. I only paid about $2 each for excellent ones. I think one of them did cost me $4 or $5. Since I did need those, I probably would have been willing to spend more if I had to, but it wasn't necessary. Then I changed wheels and they would not fit. So.............I bought an excellent set of 53 Plymouth full wheel hubcaps at the swaps. Again, I couldn't find a complete set all at once in good condition. But.........I did get the whole set in a combination of two swaps. I paid less than $20 for all five of those and all they needed was soap and water to clean them up. Hubcaps are cheap if you bide your time and hit the swaps. Quote
JerseyHarold Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Hubcaps are cheap because there is very little demand for them. My friend is heavily into vintage hubcaps. 'Driver quality' hubcaps don't go unless you're practically giving them away. He can't sell anything unless it's perfect and then the buyers don't want to pay what it's worth. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted October 9, 2008 Author Report Posted October 9, 2008 I kinda know what you mean about selling hubcaps. I used to collect them and sell at swap meets. Wire spoke covers and the wheel centers, like rally sport, were good items quite a few years ago. Pretty good ones would bring a decent price. But in the last few years, it seems everyone wants perfection. So the nice, but driver quality stuff mostly quit selling. I still have a few caps that I couldn't get rid of at the last swaps by saying "wife says they gotta go -- make offer" or something like that. Quote
