Merle Coggins Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 As I've stated here many times, I have a 4 speed non-synchronized transmission in my truck. I also have another 4 speed trans that came out of a '51 or '52 stashed away in my garage. Last night I was able to get at the bottom of it and found that the drain plug points straight back. The drain plug on the trans in my truck points down on an angle. Does this mean that my spare is a synchronized trans? Short of pulling off the cover, is there another way to know what it is? Also, I've heard of partial synchronized transmissions where only 3rd-4th gears are synchronized. Was this the case in all of those earlier transmissions? If so it's still better than what I have now. I've found that it seems to get going a bit quicker if I start out in 3rd, using the Fluid Drive to my advantage, then upshift to 4th. Also, many times a quick downshift back to 3rd would be helpful when making some turns. However, with the non-synchro trans I usually just leave it in 4th and let it pull through the Fluid Drive because a "quick" downshift just isn't possible. So, if a trans wasn't synchronized from 2nd to 3rd, but was between 3rd and 4th, I could live with that. Also, If I was to make the switch, the spare trans doesn't have the Fluid Drive input shaft. Would the input shafts interchange with one another to make the spare trans work in my truck? Merle Quote
Allan Parkhurst Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Under the Teck section on transmissions page 21-10 it shows the straight plug as 4 speed Helical Gear Synchromesh. Check it out. Quote
Bodacious Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Yes, there are partially synchronized transmissions, usually they're synchronized in every gear except low and reverse. I just got done going through a '64 Falcon 3-speed that is like that. Quote
Reg Evans Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Yup ....drooping plug = crash box , plug held high = synchro . Quote
Byronb3b Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 The drain plug on my '52 points straight back and is sychronized in all gears, except 1st and reverse, I can still grind them!!!!!!! Quote
Merle Coggins Posted August 21, 2008 Author Report Posted August 21, 2008 Well then... If the input shaft on my "crash box" will work with the "synchro" unit I just might be swapping them soon. Merle Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 1st and 2nd are not syncronized gears. The old crash box transmissions are great to use once you learn to drive like you had to in those days-meaning double clutching! I learned when I was young to drive straight cut gears. Some of my Dodges are 5 speed crash box units W/2 speed timken rear ends-double clutching and split shifting all day long! Bob Quote
carl b51 Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 Merle it sounds like you have a synchro 4 speed out of a B-3-g I have that same trans. in my B3B it was a transplant it has synchros in 2nt,3rd and 4th if you can fit it behind your fluid drive you will like it. No Grinding noise ! Carl Quote
Partsstore Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 I just discovered that my trans which drives like it is a non synchro is actually a synchromised box. That means it needs some work. Anyone knows if there are rebuilt kits for them? And where to get them? info@partsstore.eu Thanks, Jan Quote
