  1. You kiddin'? I wouldn't check the oil if I didn't intend to start it.. ? But I get it. I'm pretty good about checking oil in my motorcycles and lawnmowers. Back in the old days I checked the oil in whatever I was driving every day. I've never checked the oil in my Bruce Berry van. If it was using a quart every 500 miles it would be 10 quarts low when I take it in for service. Then again they don't check the oil before they change it, only after. The van's about 2.5 k from it's last oil change. I was gonna check it yesterday but that darn dipstick is way down in there so I just gave it a pass. Hang on a minute, I'll go out and check it.....It's now 17:12 on 2-13-19. Insert Jeapordy music here... 17:21 Had to give the horse a carrot while I was outside. As suspected, the van is still full of oil.. Not bad for a 200k mile 2014 Econoline, huh??
  2. Unless the OP is wanting something that looks original this one would be easily adapted. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Tractor-or-Car-12-volt-60-amp-1-wire-alternator-Positive-Ground-GM-w-pulley/233121975109?hash=item3647270b45:g:ji0AAMXQbcRQ8N-i:rk:4:pf:1&frcectupt=true
  3. Congrats, that's a really nice car!!
  4. Another post made me remember "From a Jack to a King." As always, YouTube sucked me in. I'm not a big Robbie fan but I always liked this particular song. Great backup band, Tony Levin, Manu Katche, Daniel Lanois, Bill Dillon.. What can I say, I'm all kinds of a music nerd.. ?
  5. I have an alternator on my P-15. Super easy but mine is negative ground. On a sort of related note and only remembered by the superannuated amongst us.. Hey, I can't help how my brain makes connections!!! ZZZZZPPP!!!!
  6. Tell Mater for me that you're supposed to check the oil before you start 'em up. ?
  7. I'm not sure I remember the first car I bought but I think it was a '58 Ford two door sedan, 223 six with an automatic. I paid $100-150 for it. It was a nice car and I don't recall having too many problems with it. I traded cars a lot back then. I bought a new Chevy pickup in '78. It had all the Chevy issues of the era, cam developed a flat lobe about 70k, body rusted out before it should have. Then again I bought a 1965 Mustang in 1970 with rusty quarters and lower front fenders. Everything rusted worse back then. Fast forward a decade or two and in '96 I bought a '94 Explorer. When I gave it to the kid it had around 350k on it. The transmission finally gave out at about 400k. It's still in my junkyard and the 4.0 pushrod motor still runs. I'm thinking about using the rear end in my P15. My wife drove a '98 Windstar for a few years. Bought it with 40k or so on it, got rid of it with a leaky head gasket and weird electrical issues at about 200k. Then she had a Honda for a while. She liked the Windstar so next was a spanky new 2008 Grand Caravan which was a great driver but a real piece of junk. Front rotors were toast at 25k, CV joints clicking at less than 50k, transmission stopped working just shy of 125k. It was gone by 2011 and she's been driving Hondas since then. I don't get involved with her cars too much but the Hondas have been pretty much trouble free but she usually gets rid of them by the time they get to 50-60k. I've owned a lot of vehicles of many makes in my life and like I said, you can get a dud in anything.
  8. I useta feel the same way. I was a Chevy guy for decades. I still am, but I have Fords and MoPars, too. ? I've put a lot of miles on all of them. Some were good vehicles and some weren't. I eventually decided that one brand isn't really better than the other, just different. They all have their share of duds..
  9. I remember the ads when the 80" motor came out. "Put six more inches between your legs!" I have a '69 FLH with a stock 74" motor and a '70 FLH with 80" bore, 4-1/2" S&S flywheels and a B grind cam. In some ways I like the 74" better. It has enough power and seems a little less stressed going down the road. Kicks easier, too. Maybe I just push the bigger motor harder. Looking at it critically, this is one of the best motorcycles I've ever owned. Not the most exciting but dependable and super easy to work on.
  10. Fine vehicles all around.. I'm not brand loyal, at least up to a point. My Econoline has 200k on it with only oil changes and tires but it's just transportation. OTOH I doubt I could put 200k on my P15 without replacing everything on it once or twice.. And it leaks a little oil, too!! ?
  11. That's what I'm hoping for but for some reason I thought there was a difference in the knuckles. I need to get the Dodge parts and just compare them to the Plymouth. My crystal ball sees a trip to St. Louis in my future.. ?
  12. Yeah, it's hard to believe there isn't a spot under the knuck.. Evos don't leak and the breather, which mostly accounts for earlier H-D's leaving a spot, is generally vented back to the intake newer bikes. I have two late model Harleys that are leak free. Earlier ones not so much. On anything earlier most of us just dump it onto the ground. A little oil leak isn't the end of the world anyway. ?
  13. Yeah, but as T120 pointed out, no caliper or master cylinder... They work better with all that stuff.
  14. I don't know that that's entirely true but in the real world you'd have a hard time unloading the 440 Kawa for $500 and the knuckle would part out for $15-20k.
  15. That crossed my mind, too..
  16. That's the right attitude! Keep on keepin' on!!
  17. Yeah, it would. A friend has a whole front suspension from a D-24 he's sub-framing and I thought bigger drums might be an improvement without too much effort. He says he's been getting some grief over his swap but I'm cheering him on. I can't see how two or three times as much power, fuel injection, disc brakes, and power steering could be a bad thing.
  18. Is it possible to run D24 brakes on P15 spindles? I'm giving some thought to trying the larger Dodge brakes on my Plymouth. Thanks in advance! Al
  19. 48, huh? You geezers crack me up! ? Enjoy your youth, get back to me in 20 years and tell me if you still have that much energy. I work 40-60 hours a week and don't have trouble sleeping but the late night thing is over. As far as cruising forums, this one is the extent of my online presence and when I'm busy I don't even look in here.
  20. Wow!! That's scary! I never did more than walk around asking dumb questions and disturbing everyone else's sleep.
  21. I don't have any problems getting to sleep or going back to sleep when nature calls at night. When I was younger I walked in my sleep a lot. Started when I was a kid and went on until I was in my 30's. Imagine some wild eyed guy walking into your bedroom at 2:00 a.m. saying "What was that? I saw something red!!" I've been told I asked that question a lot. Now I just wake up screaming sometimes.. Sometimes, not always; it wakes me up and when it does I'm usually laughing by the time I'm conscious. My wife thinks I have a problem but after 48 years she's given up trying to figure it out. She recently started keeping a baseball bat by the bed, supposedly in case of intruders but I wonder..?
  22. Couldn't agree more.. They're all our dream cars, even the ones others think are junk. Young Nick's starting out well.. and with a pretty darn nice car! ?
  23. True, if I change my mind fast enough it washes off easy with lacquer thinner.. Wouldn't be the first time. I had myself talked into painting it a '70s light green metallic once but came to my senses before I bought the paint. If I ever get to retire maybe it'll get finished. If not it won't matter.. I'm gonna leave more than one unfinished project behind... ?
  24. I can't add much to the advice already given other than to ask if you replaced all four tires. Maybe you have a bad tire. A loose belt in a radial can cause squirrelly steering and if you only replaced the fronts and have a mix of radial and bias ply tires it's only going to be worse. Otherwise, support the front end on jack stands, and it wouldn't hurt to put something else somewhere under the frame to make sure it doesn't fall on you; then rock each wheel left to right and up and down to see if you can figure out where that slack came from. Nice looking car!!
  25. Hey, Nick! Just ran across this thread. You're making good headway. I understand how hard it is to pick a color. I've had a '54 Ford Customline in my shop waiting on a color choice for almost 10 years. It's frustrating to have a car within a week or so of being on the road and still be unable to make a color decision. Then again, I'm usually busy with paying jobs and I'm easily distracted.. ?
