  1. cheers dave, very useful, cleaned the points and now I have a (small ) spark at the plugs..well some of them as I´ve just seen that the leads are rubbish and pretty deteriorated. however it appears to be negative earth...based on lack of spark with positive earth and smoke coming out of the starter !!! however still no combustion..i´ve poured petrol into the carb, and tried to feed it with gravity, but no joy as yet, and all these intents are playing havoc with the batteries and the crocodile clips..it takes a massive draw from them. (I´m using a 12v battery) i´ll pull the carb to bits to see if its blocked or something tomorrow. also started on the drivers door sill and primering the roof and wing...(the most porous of the rust spots)
  2. thanks guys, in theory I´ll be keeping the flatty for a while on the jag front suspension.that is why I´m trying to get a spark in it. so heres the question, I´ve got the thing wired up like I do on the 2cv´s.. negative from coil goes to distributor positive from coil goes to battery (in this case the negative terminal?) negative from battery goes to power of starter motor positive to earth on motor when turning over I should get a spark or not??..because I don´t..not sure whether its wired wrong of the coil or leads need changing..the plugs are new obviously cheers ..very excited
  3. never seen an easy out in spain, so tapped a triangular file into the hole gently and with an adjustable spanner it span right out dead easy ! also the engine is turning !, rocking back and forth in gear and the whole thing jumped free and spins, then when the starter motor terminals were cleaned up it turned the engine also, ..very happy. on the underside the crossmember is pretty knackered, it could be patched but also the left wheel is very droopy and the bearings on the right are super loose, and thats before we get to brakes etc. so as the jag engine is only 3m away Its difficult to not compare. they really are very similar in size and design, except I know the jag set up works well and I can get spares for it here....you can see where this is going.......I think the decision is making itself..add to the equation disc brakes and better steering and what would you do ???? don´t get me wrong I really respect the 1939 suspension set up , and no doubt it was way ahead of its time and everything but I think its too far gone to repair cost effectively from spain. I will of course have to explain this to the examiner here if he discovers that its not original..but what type of idiot would argue against safer brakes and steering ??? so the front clip is now separated from the jag motor and I need to figure out how to graft it onto the dodge. the total width is the same (wheels included 180 cm)the difference is the jag engine sits further forward as its longer. so plan at the moment is get the newer clip in and adapt to the flatty. can anyone see any massive problems that i´m forgetting about??
  4. I´ll be taking the body off soon but only because the chassis is full of rot and the lower 3 inches of body also..for me it´ll make life a lot easier.. I guess it depends on the extent of work you need to do
  5. inspirational stuff!..I´ve got all that to do !, I hope I´m as lucky with the motor
  6. thanks guys..pretty bloody obvious really, I forgot all about the flywheel!...at least I now know the generator spins nice and fast !! the broken plug..they say heat and a small chisel ! yikes
  7. haha ! that was a 12 v but the sparks scared Lily a bit!..It echoed around the whole valley! so anyway here come the tech questions. .....assume zero knowledge of flatheads. I pulled the whole of the front end off today, as it seems the engine is seized after all!...and I need access to the front crank bolt first good thing was that the (what I assume is ) the starter motor (the motor on the left near the fan) works well...with a 12v battery it spins fast. the second good thing was that 5 of the rusted spark plugs came out easily the first bad thing was that 1 of them snapped . i´m pretty sure this is not the first time this has ever happened in the galaxy..what is the best technique to get the blighter out?????-.-...I thought cutting a slot and unscrewing it with a massive screwdriver ???? I was also perplexed that the depth inside the spark holes was very shallow for all....thinking surely some of the pistons should be further down than others ???, then I saw this which I assume explains it....below the plugs are the valves yes? another thing I don´t understand is what is the second motor on the right with the foot switch contact??. I´m assuming the footswitch is some sort of starting mechanism which made me think that maybe the motor on the right is the starter instead?? a bit confused...one of them ought to be a generator or something I´ve put petrol and oil in the plug holes and I´ll try and rock the car or the crank bolt to free it off..any good tips from the top.?? cheers all sig
  8. so you gave me an idea harley!...we got the horns working after cleaning the terminals a bit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Y4rw7mmjIw&feature=youtu.be
  9. not a bad idea, ! but I think the fuel injection might give the game away!!! so straight to it, grinding down all the sharp edges (rotted drip rail, flaky paint etc), it definitely used to be yellow all over, which means it probably has millions of miles on the clock !!..oh well..its nice to know some history. floor cut out and boot. I left the rear seat in for the moment because I like sitting in it ! first job will be reinforce and reconstruct the door sills and the joints to the a and b pillars. I´d like to do a subtle channeling while I´m at it like 6cm or something..take the bottom of the sills down to the bottom of the chassis level...just because I may as well., then seperate the top from the bottom and sort out and box the chassis and cross members. at least this is the plan at the moment. I´m amazed at the quality of the steel, it ages more like cast iron rather than sheet steel, and the chrome on the bumper was way thicker than anything they do today. some pix
  10. guess whos a happy camper !!! went to get the dodge today from barcelona after pàying the import bills and everything else they threw at me!, the car is totally knackered......but is utterly awesome also!!!, it is much more beautiful (apart from the rust etc ) than fotos show it to me, the curves and lines are lovely, the door details are amazing and the interior space is enormous and just feels good (despite being in tattersI), its weird....the car is probably in worse condition than I expected but has a really nice feel to it that I can´t describe. the floors are useless, most of the trim is there, the air heater and rear light glasses are in a box with the rear wings etc. the chassis has loads of rust, the front crossmember is rotted and needs work, the wheels rotate, and the engine turns by hand. its funny when I arrived at the import place, there where a load of cool classics an old impeccable MG, a 70´s porsche, and a load of bmw´s, and then hiding on the other side of a load of oil barrels they put my rusty old wreck!. it had to be forklifted to the exit and then winched onto the truck, (mainly because of the shredded rear tyre) as luck would have it the stud pattern is the same as vintage mercedes, as as I have a load of extra wheels for the fintail I swapped them over at home to make pushing easier. also a big discovery is that it used to be yellow !..I´m thinking that it was probably a ny cab. ? where they all yellow or black and yellow? I´d seen a pic somewhere. anyway, it was dark when we got it pushed in so more pix and discoveries tomorrow heres the stuff from today
  11. very impatiently waiting for customs nonsense mate ! its in valencia..for no apparent reason as I said it had to go to Barcelona from the beginning. but I think they´re on the case! also the spanish forums are saying its gonna be very difficult getting the jaguar engine through the net !...I´ll probably have to go the safe way with all original stuff until it has documentation...which actually is fine I´m looking forward to getting the flattie running hopefully it´ll clear customs this next week! ???????
  12. yeah weirdly all the papers are supposed to go either with the car or with the transporters!, I ´havent seen or recieved anything yet apart from bills!..it could be a massive dream
  13. yep I guess I´d better prepare myself for the spain end of this story now!!. its transported in a container and insured, but I doubt very much I´m allowed anywhere near the port (which is huge ) until they ring me!..but yes i will be on my guard for nonsense.
  14. super slick mate. love it..its gonna be a long time till mine is at that level! on that subject....and I quote......" the dodge left the US on saturday January 17th ".....YYYEEEESSSSSS! AT LAST! spainward bound
  15. hijack as much as you want mate !, I´d actually like to see more pix of your machine!, its good for inspiration purposes, has it still got the original flatty? if so how do you manage with motorway traffic? cheers sig
  16. ok this is a long shot but I wondered if there´s anyone out there that would be willing to spend an hour or 2 under and in an old 1954 chrysler to find and or resusitate the engine and chassis numbers?? I would pay for their time and petrol, etc, .if so I could contact the transport people and say a representative of mine is wanting to look over the car to find the missing numbers cheers sig
  17. very cool pix !, really got the mood of these old interiors
  18. looks great ! ( a lot better than the 39 Im waiting for!) any more pix, hows the interior?
  19. oh my ! that is a thing of beauty mr wolf! liking the ride height with those wheels also...whats the roof height from the floor approx??
  20. yep I know, I´m sure when it finally arrives I´ll find loads of numbers, but these guys are in a warehouse shipping cars I don´t suppose they like the idea of getting too dirty!
  21. small update!..they´ve given me a date !, theoretically the dodge leaves the "new continent" for the old one on the 10th of jan..which means it´ll get here around the end of the month. meanwhile the chrysler is still stuck with the numbers. they found something resembling numbers on the engine but were too rusted to decode. so they´re redoing the vin number paperwork so it can actually leave the country, they reckon they looked all over for other numbers but I can only insist so far from this distance!..anyway excited about the dodge
  22. you guys are the best! all info passed on to the people that need to know..lets hope they´re in agreement I´ll tell you what happens, thanks for the fast response xxxx
  23. heres the found Vin number, and the one on the papers is C541818909..if that helps at all?????
  24. Hi chaps!, I´m still here and still waiting!, we have an urgent / difficult problem that I don´t understand and I hope you pros, can shed some light on the matter please. the Vin number on the chrysler newyorker is different to the paperwork. but I´ve been told that there are various numbers dotted around the car and its simply a matter of finding the right one!!!..(this sounds strange to me but could I suppose be true), the seller says this I have been told that these numbers are often below the valve covers (?) on the passenger side. But you will need a person (a mechanic is best) who is willing to get dirty, and they should have some tools because the numbers could be behind a engine part, such as the generator. They will also be on the outside of the frame. (Generally somewhere behind the driver?) But you will need to lift the car. is there any truth to this or is it a scam?..its the v8 hemi firepower engine on a 54 newyorker. any pointers would be very helpful indeed, otherwise they won´t let me export or import the car cheers sig
  25. oh my goodness, I´ve just looked it up and its wheel base is about 6 inches more than the dodge!, and I thought the dodge was massive. never mind the boat, I´m gonna need a bigger house!
