  1. Actually, there are other annoying ads where I have checked the boxes and reported them but they keep coming back, like the aging lady. Why are these ads popping up between posts?
  2. Good advice. Thanks.
  3. I have a friend who owned a shop and has a brake arching machine he won't ever use again. How much you think I should offer? I think for him it would be a token offer. I don't think he's the type to just give it away. It worked the last time he used it, but some animals got dirt into the motor compartment and he doesn't know if the motor still works. Since he will never try to clean it up himself, it's pretty much an "I'll take it as it is" kind of thing. But I have a hunch that with the dirt removed and the motor cleaned up, that it will run okay. I'm certainly willing to take a chance for the right price. He also thinks that he had a Miller brake adjusting tool "somewhere". I'm taking him out to lunch to look for that "somewhere".
  4. Now that I'm used to it I think it's great! It's unbelievable to me how a site like this works. And I really appreciate that there is somebody on this site who is capable of doing all this time-consuming work. And I think this new site looks so much more professional than the last. No, he didn't pay me to write this post!
  5. Thanks Tom for the offer. Let me take another look at mine. I'll post a photo. Maybe it is bad. I don't know. All I know is that I thought that I could simply turn that little handle and coolant would come out. Instead the whole darn fitting came out of the radiator. Maybe I can loosen it up to where it'll work again. I'll check it out. Thanks again!
  6. I've been soaking the drain cock on the front lower right (driver's) side of the radiator with penetrant and it finally unscrewed, except the whole unit came off instead of just the little valve turning. Are these reverse thread by any chance?
  7. When I go to like the second page of a post, my original question appears at the top and I have to scroll all the way down to the bottom to see the latest reply. Should that be?
  8. I mean bottom left!!
  9. Ah, so that's the inside of a welch plug.
  10. It'd be great if the page numbers of a thread were also positioned at the top of the page as well as the bottom right. It'd save scrolling down to reach them. Or am I missing something?
  11. Thanks Don for the info and photo. I've been reading about how not to break off bolt heads. I hope I don't! I know there are places not to use a torch to heat bolts. I've read where if you heat them cherry red and let them cool while squirting penetrating oil down the threads, you stand a better chance of getting them out intact. Now, I guess you first try a socket wrench and if that doesn't work then an impact wrench??
  12. What are these engine openings?
  13. When I fire up the engine I'll see how much blue smoke there might be. Is replacing that gasket a complicated affair?
  14. Moderator: How can I control the size of these photos? Do I have to edit before I post? Sorry.
  15. I maybe should have started a new thread but this seems to be in line with the subject matter we're talking about. After changing my oil, I looked over the engine again with an eye toward the new knowledge I've learned in just the past few days. Here is a photo of the exhaust manifold to exhaust pipe flange and gasket. As you can see there seems to be a leak. What would cause oil to leak into the exhaust manifold?
  16. Great, thanks.
  17. Yeah, I've thought of that after seeing some rebuilt flat heads for sale by private owner for 1K or so. But then you don't really know what you're getting from a private owner. I'll have to Google Jasper's.
  18. I do recall seeing the 25" block mentioned somewhere or another. That's a good point, a mistake I could easily have made. Now where to find an old flat head in Iowa. I do have a classic car museum near me that does all their own restorations. I imagine I'll be bending their ears quite a bit when I do this project. By the way, what will I be paying for a flat head and how can I tell if it's a worthy candidate?
  19. Thanks Rallyace. I've just poured over the article on rebuilding a flat head and the writer answered a lot of questions for me, mostly that some of the operations such a honing and boring and that sort of thing are more time consuming than too difficult. I think I'd buy a used engine and work on that. If I blow it at least I will learn what I did wrong. If it runs, I can always swap it out. One of the things that this article brought home to me is to remove the feeling of doing all that work and finding it runs crappy or not at all. There' a learning curve with everything and sometimes I get too impatient. Anyway, thanks to all of you, I now plan to get another engine and give a go.
  20. Maybe I'm calling something by a different name. For example, if I want to see posts containing the words "Oil Filter".
  21. Ah, yes. I didn't see the radiator in the first photo, and I thought you just ran the engine ten hours on the stand with no radiator. I couldn't see how that would be very good for the motor.
  22. No, I haven't read all that info, but I have copied it and am very excited about reading it.
  23. I know there's a way to get to the old threads archives because I stumbled across them once, but I can't seem to find my way back in. ??
  24. That's a pretty engine! Where does the coolant come from?
