  1. Has anyone run a Gyromatic (semi-automatic) trans with a non-stock carb? I've looked at the wiring diagrams and wonder if one could use a push-button switch to manually control and replace the carb kickdown switch. There's also some funny thing called an "anti-stall" switch or somethin'. I'd love to switch to a 2bbl carb instead of paying $$$ for a 2x1 manifold
  2. Not that I know of. You'd have modify your brake lines no matter what.
  3. I think "street view" is pretty cool. It's saving me a ton of time house-hunting for my upcoming move
  4. Wow, looks like a much more attractive option than buying new ($200)!
  5. Yup...have 'em at NAPA
  6. Kinda seems silly to upgrade to discs and keep that old single pot master cylinder. I'd upgrade to a dual chamber master before adding discs. My two cents
  7. I took the Dodge out of winter storage (ie removed car cover and put battery back in) and let 'er warm up. This is the first time I've even tried to start an old car in sub 50 degree weather. The car hadn't been started in a few months, but she fired right up! And my temp gauge started working again somehow. Oh well, just thought I would share. Sometimes it seems like this old flathead-powered tank is my most reliable vehicle
  8. I have a 6V optima redtop in my Dodge. I made a box for it out of an old army ammo box. It works fine, no problems, and I've never run it down even after a few "hard starts"
  9. Are there any later mopar manual transmissions that will bolt up to a flat 6? I know about the T5, but the kit is $$$$$! I know some are using the earlier topshift trannys but I'd like something newer if possible ?
  10. I don't know where you guys are all living, but here in small town USA we still have parts stores and engine shops that have been around for 50+ years, family owned, etc. I took a late-model head in for a valve job last week and I drove my '49 Coronet. Dude in the engine machine shop quickly recognized it as a '49 and told me about his '50 Dodge that he had years ago...said he has been working at the shop for 40 years!
  11. Where can you buy reproduction tanks? Just found out mine is leaking today...'49 Coronet
  12. I ran over to NAPA and got some tractor fluid, topped off the fluid drive, and it moves! I don't know if that was the problem or not, but it is fixed for now :D
  13. Hi all, I've got a '49 Dodge with a gyromatic trans. I have an intermittent problem where the car acts like it won't go into gear, or the clutch is not engaging or something. Basically I'll put the car in gear, let off the clutch, and the engine will just rev and rev and the car won't move. There's no shuttering or slipping to indicate a clutch problem. I'm going to check the fluid drive fluid, if that was low, would that cause this problem? The car behaved like this once at a stoplight during a 75 mile trip. After letting the car sit for 5 mins or so, it was back on the road with no problems. I drove the car around the block last week, now after going out to start it, it won't move. Help!!
  14. I just did mine, I got new Raybestos from Rockauto at a pretty good price. It's a good feeling not waking up to a puddle of brake fluid under the wheels every morning
  15. Takes me about 2 mins to pull mine I like to bench bleed it too, plus I don't like lying on the floor if I don't have to. Horses for courses though!
  16. Hi all, got a '49 Dodge Coronet, it smokes a little, usually when taking off from a stop and decelerating from 40-50mph. I haven't done a compression check yet, but it is on the agenda. Engine runs great, has good oil pressure, doesn't overheat, doesn't burn coolant, and so on. I'm wondering if anyone has any tricks to stop or minimize the smoke. I don't think I'm ready to invest in an engine rebuild for such a minor annoyance
  17. You can get this at NAPA, I believe. It's cheap and easy.
  18. I've been told my '49 Dodge will leak through the hood seam, getting the plugs wet and causing all sorts of havoc. I'm going to start parking it outside soon, so any advice on how to seal it up? Would simple silicone sealant do the trick or what? Thanks guys
  19. I'm going to be trailering/towing my '49 Dodge about 75 miles in a move. It has a gyromatic semi-automatic trans, I'm wondering if I can tow it on a dolly (rear wheels would be on the road) without pulling the driveshaft?
  20. I just ordered some oval valve stems from patchboy.com...they look like they should do the trick. The local tire dude just gave me a blank stare
  21. I just did the "soapy water test" (should've done that to begin with) and they're definitely leaking from the valve stems. I guess I need brass/two-piece stems?
  22. I got some tubeless radials put on my old bias-ply rims, and they're leaking pretty badly. I was, uh, hoping this wouldn't happen but ya know They're losing about 5-10psi every 2-3 days or so. I haven't been able to find a tire shop locally that even knows what a "tubed radial" is!!! Any experiences or opinions?
  23. I pulled my rear drums yesterday and found one of the right rear wheel cyl seals completely blown apart and the shoe lining GONE. Glad I haven't taken it for a test drive yet
  24. My tack welds broke so I put a little JB Weld on it...we'll see how it goes. Any other suggestions if the JB doesn't hold?
