harleybraydin Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 I am having an issue that maybe you guys can give me some insite on. My 1950 plymouth special deluxe is not getting fuel to the carb. I out a new fuel pump in it about a month ago and it ran great. The other day my wife and I frove into town to get gas because I am not sure how correct the fuel gauge is. As we are driving into town it spits and sputters and dies. Figured I ran out of gas even though the gauge says 1/4 tank. So get the five gallon tank out of the trunk and get gas. Dump it in and now I can not seem to get gas to flow. I look under the car and the glass bulb on the fuel pump looks full but still nothing. took the fuel lines off and blew them out to make sure it is not plugged. Still nothing. I should mention that the car sat for 25 years before I pulled it from a barn. but most everything has been replaced. Thanks in advance for any help. Quote
Normspeed Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 Take a look at the little flex line near the pump, on the inlet side. They can crack and the pump sucks more air than fuel. Quote
Lou Earle Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 tank could be full of mscl crap - remove and clean Quote

Don Coatney Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 The glass bowl on the fuel pump contains a filtering screen. Remove it and clean it. Then install an aftermarket fuel filter between the tank and fuel pump. I installed my filter in the fuel line on the inside of the frame rail below the drivers door for easy access. Also disconnect your fuel line at the carburetor and stick the disconnected line in a plastic jug. Then crank the engine over with the starter motor and watch the jug. You should get 3-4 ounces of gasolene in a 10 second burst. Quote
bob_amos Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 Best thing to do is remove the fuel inlet line right at the carb. Turn her over and see if there is fuel there. If so you might want to check the needle and seat. Mine sticks from time to time if I let the fuel remain in the tank for while. After a few months it starts to degrade and becomes a bit stickey. I have an electric pump and turn the key on and tap on the bowl a few times until the pump becomes quiet. You could have the wife turn her over and tap on the bowl a few times and see if it starts flowing. Best would be to prime the engine so it will fire up while you are tapping. It'll stay running if it opens the needle from the seat. If there is no fuel at the inlet try putting a can with fuel in it near the pump. Place a fuel line from the inlet of the pump to the can with fuel in it. If it starts there is a restriction between the pump and tank, or in the tank. If not recheck that new pump and the cam that operates it as well as the fuel line up to the carb. Before you do any of this be sure to make sure that the screen in the pump is clean. That screen is the one item that does get fouled up and often. Quote
greg g Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 Also disconnect the fuel line on the tank sode of the pump and blow some compressed air back toward the tank ( keep the pressure about 15 lbs or so) The is an olilight filter in the tank and it can get clogged with tank junk. that should clear it fo a few hundred miles.
