Well I got the all four doors and the trunk lid painted this weekend. I started a new thread as I'm sure with all the pics on the last thread it was taking a while to load.

Next step is to sand and buff the doors and the trunk lid. Then I will reassemble them and mount them on the car. I can't wait to see the car back together with all four doors. :)

Next on the list is to sand and buff the rest of the car, then prime the hood and do some bodywork to the rear fenders. Once that is done I will paint those parts too. Getting closer to getting it back on the road where it belongs.

I got the vent window frames painted last night. I had painted the interior trim on them already, just needed to add the black to the frames.

They are reinstalled and the interior looks good with the blue trim so far. Trunk lid was sanded and buffed last night, I'll install it tonight. More pics to come.

Got the trunk lid sanded and buffed and put back on the car. Both front doors have been sanded and buffed too. Will be putting new seals on the doors and putting the trim, door handle, etc. back on next week before reinstalling them.

I couldn't resist last night and had to put some of the chrome back on, makes it look more like a car. :)

Looking really nice. I like the color keyed tail pipe.:D

(I know that will eventually get fixed)

When you get the lights hooked up, be sure to check the center

brake light as well as the tail lights for brightness if you use the

blue dot lenses. I put my original center lense back in as the

dot one was a little dim and harder to see. Still have the dots

in the tail lights.

Thanks for the comments Bob.

I hooked up the lights last night and it worked real good. I've had that center lense on for a while and it lights up nice. Much better at night though. I'll have to get behind it in the daylight and make sure it is good and visible. Never really thought about it as I do have the lense with the ship in it too. Could put it back in if need be.

Been working late every night this week trying to get the doors all color sanded, buffed, and reassembled. Got the doors back on the car and seals installed.

Trim and handles are back on as well. Back quarters have been sanded and buffed too.

I worked the last few nights getting the rear fenders ready. Hood wasn't too bad and just needed sanded down and primed. Plan is to paint the front piece with the plymouth nameplate, painted part behind grille, cowl vent, hood, and rear fenders next weekend. Then more reassembly will need to be done.

I also got all four wheels stripped of paint and will be painting them the next few weeks blue. Got a few more pics for your enjoyment.

Looks great! I have a question, I'm starting to paint my International truck, got some panels dipped, and bought some epoxy primer. Did you use SSU or BC/CC? I don't want alot of gloss I think I would get with the clearcoat.

Posted

I used a basecoat/clearcoat system. Works really good and doesn't leave a mess in the garage as bad as the single stage does. Seems like once that stuff hits the floor, wall, or whatever else it never dries.

I gave each panel 3 coats of clear. Wanted the extra clear so I would have enough to block it flat and buff it.

Looks really nice. thanks for the tip on the color. Looking at yours and Don C.'s has just about convinced me to go that color. I think that's close to what the original was on my P-15 before it went white, then yellow. Need to get some dings out and it'll look good. Keep posting, you're giving some of us the incentive to get moving on these projects. Wayne P.

Steve, you got some kind of touch, your work looks flawless. You also make the aurgument for wet sanding and buffing. The past two cars that I have had painted were wet/buffed and I must say it turns the whole job into a real eye catcher. You are going to be on the road in no time. You must work with no distractions. You are also right about centari, it is messy and never dries. I still have it on my garage door after painting my truck fender and the residue is still on everything and that was 10 years ago. Keep it up:) nice

Thanks for the nice comments guys. Always good to have moral support while sweating buckets in the garage working on the car. :)

Rodney, last car I did I only wet sanded and buffed certain panels that had lots of dust nibs. I decided to sand every panel this time. So glad I did as it is a mirror like finish and nice and flat. No orange peel at all. Only way to go now in my opinion.

I went ahead and cleaned up the wheels and painted them body color. Had them off the car to paint. Also painted all four door interior moldings. Painted them body color too and hope to get them back in the car next week.

The color is a little brighter on the wheels, but that is because I did not sand and buff them. I have to put the trim rings and hubcaps back on so that should tone it down a bit. If not I guess I can sand and buff them a bit.

I have the hood and rear fenders sanded down and ready to paint. Will be painting them tomorrow morning before the heat sets in. Heat index up to 102 today. Very humid. Working evenings on this car does not matter with the heat. Guess I'll have to get up about 4am before I go to work and work on the Plymouth then if I want to stay cool.

I'll post more pics tomorrow.

Hey Nate. I purchased a Develbiss gun kit from Eastwood. HVLP gravity feed.

I really like the guns and they were not too expensive. Comes with a 1.3, 1.5, and 1.8mm tips. Use the 1.3 for basecoat/clearcoat and the 1.8 for the primer.

I think I paid about $25 less for this a year ago. Like everything else the price keeps going up.

Over the weekend I was able to get the hood and rear fenders painted. I color sanded and buffed the passenger side front fender, put the trim and headlight ring back on as well. Looking really nice.

I hope to get the other fender sanded and buffed tomorrow. I think I'm going to sand and buff the rear fenders off the car. Need to paint the back of the hood black and then probably will bolt it on the car then sand and buff it there. Will be much easier in the long run.

My goal is to have her ready to go the Frog Follies in Evansville, IN. the weekend of Aug. 22nd. It will be pushing it, but a goal will keep me going. Next up to work on are the front and rear bumper filler panels. Need to clean them off and put a skim coat of filler to clean them up a bit. Then I'll paint them and mount them to the car.

Here's more pics.
