bighammer48 Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 Hi guys, I have the "Chrysler Full Flow" cartridge type oil filter on my D24. I changed the oil and filter cartridge, but I am getting seepage around the threads of the filter housing cap. I tried a new gasket 2X. Each time, I coated the gasket with grease and tightend the cap as much as I dare. Still the seepage. It happens in a different spot each time, so I don't think the cap threads or housing threads are damaged, and the gasket doesn't appear to have been wrinkled when I remove it. Any suggestions? Don Coatney Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 Dodge never offered a "full flow" filtering option on a D-24. Someone must have installed an incorrect decal on your by-pass filter housing. The Crashler full flow filter housing uses an "O" ring not a gasket. One issue with the gaskets on these by-pass filters is everyone seems to think tighter is better. Try a new gasket and DO NOT tighten it within an inch of its life. Snug it up just enough so the gasket is touching the top of the housing. Then start the engine. If it leaks tighten it just a bit until it stops. Quote
bighammer48 Posted July 11, 2008 Author Report Posted July 11, 2008 In case it makes a difference, the car came to me with a red Chrysler decal on the filter canister as noted. The guy I bought it from gave me a case of FRAM C-134A oil filters. They have a flat circular black gasket in the boxes with the filters, not an "O" ring. Anyhow, thanks for the advice. Quote
greg g Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 Is your filter an cast metal deal bolted directly o the block, or is it a sheetmetal canister atached by a bracket and plumbet with two oil lines??? If it is sheet metal and has the plumbing lines it is a bypass. There shold be a spring and washer deal in the bottom that supports the canister. Make sure it is square and level and supports the element level in the cansiter. Make sure there is no debris on the lids gasket contact surface. Then as Don mentioned do not ever tighten. Remember how you put on a spin on filter, tighten till snug and then give it another 1/4 turn. Quote
bighammer48 Posted July 11, 2008 Author Report Posted July 11, 2008 I do have the sheet metal canister with the plumbing. I'll take your advice. Thank you. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 Here is a by-pass filter Here is a full flow filter Quote
Normspeed Posted July 12, 2008 Report Posted July 12, 2008 I have the atlas type bypass filter on my 53. I wanted a thick rubber gasket, like an o-ring with a square cross section. I went to a local swimming pool supply store and they had a nice selection. I found the perfect fit. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 12, 2008 Report Posted July 12, 2008 My bypass filter just uses a fairly thin round paper gasket around the top edge of the cannister. Just need to get the lid snug. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 12, 2008 Report Posted July 12, 2008 Bob; You need to get rid of the "full flow" decal. Those in the "know" laugh at these decals. Quote
Normspeed Posted July 13, 2008 Report Posted July 13, 2008 People that laugh at things like that are meant to be ignored anyway. Quote
68fastwilliams Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 So what is the proper decal? Is it the one in this picture? Quote
