found a 1953 Plymouth 4dr. not for sure if its a crambridge or cranbrook. it's in pretty bad shape but still has some good chrome and a few parts here and there. it has the overdrive transmission, which i will be removing tomorrow, can they be overhauled?

If you're going for the OD, make sure you get all the stuff that goes with it. Control cable, relay, kickdown switch, wiring, carburetor. The 53 OD carb has a different linkage piece that activates the kickdown switch.

They can be overhauled but might be mechanically servicable as-is, with a change of gear oil.

I have to ask this to make sure:

Will you use the OD or would it be for sale?

I would be very interested in buying one (for the D24).

I suppose this is the moment to make sure that an OD from '53 Ply' can be mounted in a '48 D24 fluid drive transmission car?

Gurus of the phorum, please advise, can it be done and what will it take?

Yours,

I believe you will have to use a Plymouth bellhousing and flywheel to accommodate the shorter input shaft on the Plymouth transmission. In turn the mounts for the transmission will need to be moved forward because the bellhousing is shorter. Next I believe it require a new longer driveshaft.

A better way is to swap the longer fluid drive input shaft from the standard 3spd into the OD. I believe the trouble you can run into there is having to have matching syncro types

I just swapped the input shafts on my car. Easier than trying to find bell housings and drive shafts and what not. Mine came out of a 52 plymouth non fluid drive. The input shaft was way to short for my 53.
