I have used two sets of the brake hoses made in South America bought from an ad in Hemmings Motor News. They were about half the price of what the local NAPA or Andy Bernbaum/ Plydo, ect., wanted for them, even with the shipping, averaged about 10.00 bucks per hose, about 5-6 years ago. I am not up on currrent prices, but I think about 15-20 bucks a piece is now average. As far as the quality, I put one set of them on a 48 plymouth 4 door deluxe, and a set on a 46 Ford PU. I sold the 48 Plymouth last year, never had any issues during the time I drove it., and the ones on my 46 ford are doing just fine (and it gets driven 3-4 times a week). They have been on the pickup for about 5 years, so how they prove out in the long run remains to be seen, I suppose. Just from looking/installing I can't tell any difference at all from brake hoses that NAPA or any other parts store sells. Joel

For less than 40 bucks, including shipping, for a set of hoses, I think I'll give them a try on the 49 b1b pickup I am working on restoring. The old lines LOOK fine, but have no idea when they were installed, and I am doing a complete brake re-do anyway, and am not at all concerned if they are stainless/braided or not, (at least on this vehicle). Not much to risk here as far as the money goes on a one time try for a possible source for less expensive parts. I'll try them a while and then gladly let everyone know how (good ?) they work. Worst case scenerio, I'll have to go back to dragging a foot to stop. Joel

That's when our rusty floorboards prove their worth, when you need to put your foot down, on the pavement, to get 'er stopped:D

I appreciate all the opinions on the brake line options.

These are from South America. What do you think about the overall price with shipping and possible quality issues?

I'd really prefer S.S. braided hoses. Anyone running them?

Norm,

I bought a set of three (2 front, 1 rear) for my D24 an year ago from this fellow and installed them also last summer. They were OK, right to the spec. The set was cheap and I had to mail order anyway - so why not from S-AM.

I see that a post has been put up asking about my brake hoses.

So I just wanted to put up a quick post concerning DOT Approved and Imported Non Approved hoses showing up on eBay and other sites.

You would not believe some of the junk that is getting put on vehicles.

I know because I build brake hoses and check the competition when I see them selling new brake hose sets for less than $30.00

One thing to consider is what happens if your brake hoses do fail with Non Approved hoses in the US. Did you know your insurance company does not have to pay out to you if Non approved brake parts are found on your vehicle. It is considered as modified or altered and that gets them off the hook. So guess who ends up taking the expense. I am always amazed at how much money is spent on making a vehicle look nice and showy. But then turn around and look for cheap rubber hoses or off road braided stainless and feel safe about it. If you have any questions please email them to me at goodbrakes@brakehoses.biz

I have bought brake hoses from this company http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/54-55...spagenameZWDVW

(the initial post that started this thread by Normspeed) 3 times now, and I can honestly say (as several other regular members of this forum have already stated also) they are totally good merchandise, as well as being economical, I personally having used them on 2 vehicles already, and they have held up just fine. I have paid less than $30.00 for the 3 hoses each time. They have always been shipped quickly, a straight up deal with none of the annoying BS one runs into occasionally.

If a person wants stainless hoses I am sure the others are probably fine also. I cannot speak as to these "cheap rubber hoses or off road braided stainless"...as I have had no experience with any of them, and/or having had any brake hose EVER failing on any vehicle to the point of causing an accident on any vehicle I have owned in the past 35 years, but I am satasfied and confident in these particular hoses I have bought from the initial merchant in question. I buy my hoses and many other parts at the local NAPA so far no problems and most of the time the part is in stock. I have also used rockauto which are ok but as pointed out the shipping can get expensive with additional items from different manufacturers

I have always gotten my brake hoses from local auto-parts stores, in lines such as Wagner-Lockheed, Bendix, Raybestos, EIS, Conti-Seal...

Generally, I expect to pay between $18 to $24 / hose.

If I can't find a hose listed by application (ie: 1941 De Soto), I'll go to the illustrated listing and search for the appropriate legnth, diameter, fittings, etc, and usually find what I need.

These are all name-brand, DOT-approved parts.

I checked-out the Goodbrakes e-bay site posted above, and that looks promising as well, and may be the only option for folks with early hydraulic braked cars, some of which use different fittings than the SAE inverse-flare we are used to seeing.

I would not use ancient NOS hoses, nor would I use a hose that was vastly cheaper than an off-the-shelf US part...

Brakes are not a place to cheap-out; paint, upholstery, chrome, maybe - those won't get you killed.

When it comes to brakes, suspension, tires, etc, buy the best...
