cole18cars Posted June 23, 2008 Report Posted June 23, 2008 Hello, I have a 39 P8, and think I need a new coil. I don't have to have the coil that goes thru the fire wall. What voltage would a replacement be, 40,000 volts? And where would one find one? NAPA etc. Thanks Quote
greg g Posted June 23, 2008 Report Posted June 23, 2008 Basically coils are coils. Just make sure it is not a internally resisted one. Most old style oil filled coils are built to operate on 6 to 9 volts, which is why most 12 V systems have a balast resister to drop the voltage going in to that range. You might want to check out the selection at Tractor supply company. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted June 23, 2008 Report Posted June 23, 2008 6 volt coils are on the shelf at Farm and Fleet stores and Tractor Supply. Quote
cole18cars Posted June 24, 2008 Author Report Posted June 24, 2008 Just realized that my old coil has a screw in high voltage lead. Do the universal coils have this feature, I don't think so. Can this lead be replaced with the push in type? Thanks Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted June 24, 2008 Report Posted June 24, 2008 You can use a 6volt coil with both connections on top and dtill run it thur the fire wall, you just have to run a wire to the little metal cap and connect it real good. I have about 7 coils in the basement of the old variety, they all failed me at some point. I was trying to keep the car original:mad: however I was always waiting for the coil to cool down so I could go. I finally made the decion to stop missing with those old coils and get a brand new one. I never regreted it. The Ply starts right up when ever I am ready to go. Quote
