53dodgekustom Posted May 25, 2008 Report Posted May 25, 2008 I drove all around today with my newly installed overdrive. It's so nice to actually be able to here yourself think at 70mph. Had it up to 90 going down hill! It was crazy for sure. My new bias tires are smooth and don't seem to follow the cracks much at all like I have heard the horror story's about on the net. The only problem I had was my 12 volt generator still isn't charging. If you put power to it directly from the battery it starts charging like crazy, but it doesn't when hooked up from the regulator. The regulator has power going to it but none coming out. Tried an old one that came with it and a brand new one. Same thing. Think I should try and get another? They matched it to the numbers on my generator and everything. Has to be the right one. Another thanks to kustom52plymouth for the trans. Just to think I almost put one of those new fangled ohv motors in it! Just picked up a 54 Dodge 2 door with a 241 Hemi, yet another project... Quote
Powerhouse Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 wish i could tell ya what to do for that regulator...I enjoyed hearing your OD working correctly. I just finally took my car out today with the OD in it for the first time as well. Problem is that I can't get the reverse gear to move the car. ????? I drove forward with no prob...and the od is soooo nice! Quote
greg g Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 Do a forum search for polorizing he charging system. If you didn't follow this procedure your genny won't. The first test to do is temporarily ground the field post of the generator, with the engine at high idle. If it is working and connected correctly the amp gauge will peg to full charge. If it does the gen is OK and the problem is in the regulator. You might want to pull the cover and dress the points with a points file. There is also a regulator test in the manual you can do. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 Bias tires aren't so bad. The problems you hear about them pulling in the cracks and groves of the road are usually caused by other things. One, if the tires are old and worn, they will pull more. If your shocks or other steering gear needs repair it will also cause pulling. Tow in and alignment will also cause them to pull. But, if everything is good and the tires are properly inflated and in good shape, it shouldn't pull. Now, that said. If you have problems with any or all of the things I mentioned, many times by putting radials on, the car won't pull. So..........you are just masking those problems with the radials. I have new bias tires on my coupe and it goes down the road real nice with them. Before I put the new bias tires on, the car was all over the road. Quote
Kustom52Mopar Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 Well Tom you are quite welcome, I'm just glad to see put to use again. Hope to see you and your car around this cruise season! Quote
Uncle-Pekka Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 Good to hear your OD is working fine. Was there any problem fitting it in? I need to get an OD for my '48 D24 as well. I enjoy driving it daily. It is so nice cruising low speed in the town, but on the road the old flattie is screaming already in 50mph way too loud & high. Quote

I thought there was at first but that was because I was doing it on jack stands under the car and it was dark.... yea won't make that mistake again! I did however have to switch the input shafts from my 3spd to the od trans. The 3spd one was way longer. I used to have a set of 3.54 gears in mine, it was fine for highway cruising. 70mph was about max for cruising speed. It sounded great at 60-65. A much cheaper alternative. But the od is way better. 53dodgekustom Posted May 26, 2008 Author Report Posted May 26, 2008 Thanks Greg. Obviously using the picture on the right and I'm assuming that I need the battery connected and the key on to do this? I guess I could just connect a wire with alligator clips between the two and turn the key on for a few seconds? Quote
Niel Hoback Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 The key doesn't need to be on. Just use a short piece of wire. Hold one end on the BAT terminal of the regulator, and lightly touch the Arm terminal with the other end. It will make a few little sparks and you're done. No need to hold it for any length of time. You don't have to disconnect any wires from anything either. Quote
53dodgekustom Posted May 26, 2008 Author Report Posted May 26, 2008 Alright I did it but still doesn't charge. I am taking it to a electrical hotrod shop tomorrow so we will see what the culprit is. I'm pretty sure it's the regulator. Thanks for the help. Quote
