loveoldiron Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 we are in the process of removing the flattie out of our 52 4 door coronet just looking for any advice or tips yall may have. like can you break the tranny away from the motor before you pull or does it have to come out together. also trying to remove core support and having trouble with that as well do you have to remove the grill assembly to remove that or will it come out without. also looks like the tranny crossmember is riveted in place how does that come out for tranny and motor removal. sorry for so many questions we started pulling the motor out 2 days ago and its moving along kinda slow. i can have a smallblock chevy out and on an engine stand in about an hour. dodge really put these things together well didnt they. anyway thanks in advance for yalls help Quote
Normspeed Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 If it's like my 53 Plymouth, the tranny needs to be removed first. Otherwise the crossmember won't let you tilt the motor up and out. If the front cap was off that might not be a problem. Once the tranny is off, you should be able to lift the motor and tilt the front way up, and it will clear the radiator support. I'm sorta assuming that will work because of the similarities in body style between yours and mine. I needed a load leveler for my engine hoist to make it work, and it cleared, just barely. Quote
greg g Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 If you want to pull the dog house,( the front sheet metal assembly, it oly about 15 bolts) it makes it easier to pull the engine and tranny together. Keep in minf that if you pull both, you are dealing with very close to 900 #'s Quote
brian hood Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 I pulled the engine out of my 53 pick-up. It is a flat 6. The bellhousing was made so that it would not come off till the engine was out of the truck. I thought that I would be able to disconnect the transmission and then take lose the housing. However, it had to come off at an angle that was not possible with the engine in the truck. I hope this helps. Brian Quote
Jim Saraceno Posted May 25, 2008 Report Posted May 25, 2008 I also had to pull the tranny on my '35 to get the engine out, AND before that, I had to pull the driveshaft. Before you start, get a digital camera and a label maker. Label everything before you disconnect it and take a picture before and after everything you disconnect. It will save you a lot of aggravation when it all goes back together. Here is a link to the pictures I took when I removed my engine if it will help... http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v76/JImCno/Engine%20Removal/?start=all Quote
