OT- Need help and ideas, S10 tranny

Hi,

Today I had a weird problem with my S-10 daily driver, and maybe someone knows what it is before I start pulling parts.... My stick shift is limp (please no puns, I can see em coming....). I can still shift through all gears, but it seems like nothing is holding on to the stick.... I'm just wondering if anyone has ever had this problem before with a standard....

Allan;

First off the last few e-mails I sent you bounced.

My "ex" used to accuse me of wanting too much. She put a pebble in my shoe and made me limp.

Now down to the nuts and bolts. Here is an exploded view of your S-10 T-5.

My guess would be somewhere between 15 and 17. Those detent springs of the thingie that holds the shift lever in the housing on top of the tranny. So instead of going snick snick, it goes squish, squish........

I have reason to believe you are right greg... it is in the shift tower somewhere.... because shifting gears right now is light having a spring in your hands rather than a stick, because it squishes back and forth....

I'm wondering if the installation of my remote starter has something to do with this, because at around the same time, the remote starter has been having probs as well, and I know that the shift lever/brake/ignition are all tied into this at the same time.....

Don, thx for the pics.... I'm gonna have to look for parts and get the console/boot out of the way to really check things out... I don't want to drive too long with it this way...

Oh geez, looking in the shop manual, it only gives the pic of the "shift tower" for my NV-1500... and it states, do not open it, internal parts are not available... and I could void the warranty...... oh well.... since I got no warranty, think I can do it??? :)

Anyone know where I could find parts for it? Looked on the bay, couldn't find anything and NAPA part numbers in the US won't help (because us Canajuns use a different system....must me more efficient.... which is why we can't find nothing on their site).....

Actually Greg;

you are most likely correct. Item 15 is the first place to look for a couple of reasons. First off it is plastic (glad I do not toss used parts) and second it can be replaced without removing and completely disassembling the transmission. To replace it simply remove the 4 bolts on top of the transmission and pull straight up on the shift lever.

Items 16 and 17 are a bit more difficult to replace. The transmission tailstock must be removed along with the shifting rods to access the ball and spring. This cannot be done with any comfort level with the transmission still in the vehicle.

Here are a couple of fresh pictures showing a broken item 15 that I removed from one of my transmissions.

Allan;

I have had the best luck finding transmission parts from a company located here in the Boro. Item 15 is called a "damper sleeve". Here is a link to Future Transmissions.

Here is a link to a pretty good T-5 forum.

Ok, pulled open everything today, and finally, the problem is not bad at all.... no "tranny" problem, just a shifter problem... the sleeve that my shifter uses to screw onto the tranny is broken.... so temporarily we lowered the locknut on the tranny, and screwed the sleeve down 3 or 4 threads more so that it'll hold in place until I can get a new shifter....
