Aaron Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 I just took the fuel tank off my 48' BIB pickup I am fixing up and was hoping I was going to just be cleaning it, but to my surprise the side that faces the back of the truck has rusted pretty bad. Take a look at the picture I posted and tell me your opinion of whether it can be salvaged or not. It acutally is rusted all the way through. The rest of the tank is in really good condition. I was going to take it into the same guy who fixed my radiator to have it cleaned and now to see if he can fix it... Quote
CKHughes Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 I had a radiator guy repair and coat mine. The rust through was not apparent until he boiled/cleaned it. He said it was borderline but said he's give it a shot. I have now had gas in it for about a year and have not yet had a problem. Good luck. Chris in Atlanta Quote
TJ Fire247 Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 Since the gas tank is rusted all the way through it is a hard fix. My opinion is to find a used tank (if possible). The cost to get it fixed may double what a tank would cost. Quote
Aaron Posted April 17, 2008 Author Report Posted April 17, 2008 Where the heck can I get a new or good used replacement tank? Radiator guy looked at it and said he couldn't do anything with it. So my next stop is the welding shop in town! Any help would be appreciated. Aaron Quote
Young Ed Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 Gas tank re-nu can fix that one. Might be expensive though. Quote
Aaron Posted April 17, 2008 Author Report Posted April 17, 2008 Anybody have an extra tank they are willing to sell? Quote
MBF Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 If it were me I'd look into having it repaired and lined. There are shops that do that. It may be expensive, but any used tank you find is going to be at least 49 years old unless you can come up with something NOS. Mine wasn't leaking, so I did the pour in lining trick a few years ago-I got the good stuff. Knock on wood, haven't had a problem with it. Mike Quote
grey beard Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 You might try to e-mail a fellow by the name of Dale Unger. He is an electrician from N. Dakota ane has been very helpful to many on this forum. He seems to have access to several parts trucks. Maby he can help. Check him out in the MEMBERS section of this forum. JMHO Quote
grey beard Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 Sorry - correction to that last post. It's Dale Ulrich, not Unger. My alzhimers is still creeping slowly . . . . . . Quote
oldmopar Posted April 20, 2008 Report Posted April 20, 2008 If you are not doing a pure stock truck you may be able to use a fuel cell from vendors like summitt http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?N=700+305671+115+4294908349&autoview=sku Quote
Aaron Posted June 8, 2008 Author Report Posted June 8, 2008 As you can see from the pictures, I found a guy in town that was able to fix my old tank for $100 bucks. I think he did a really nice job. I just got done cleaning, painting and installed it tonight. Quote
