HEI help

A month or so ago I put 2 barrel on the 251, runs super !! I got an HEI from Tom Langdon and I can't get that thing to run to save life. It doesn't matter where the timing is, it won't hardly come off idle and its not real smooth at idle. I followed the directions to the 'T' and it don't work. It just shakes and studders. I have checked and rechecked everythiing twice. Stock distributor works great. Has anyone had experience with Langdon's HEI ?

Thanks

I learned about the odd-even thing and thats not the problem but after watching the pully with the timing light, the centrifugal advance seems to be totally non-working. I had a lengthy discussion at Napa and since I moved the oil pump 90 degrees to allign my wires on the cap where I wanted them, did that screw up fireing allignment since it is an hei and 6 cyl (based on 120 degrees) ? I reset the dist (oil pump) to original spot and it runs ok with vacuum advance attached but will hardly come off idle with v.a. disconnected. Timing light shows cent. advance to be screwed up. Car Quest is checking to get a kit, Napa doesn't have it. I'll keep you posted

Timing is timing no mater what dist. you use. Oil pump shaft doesn't mater where that is as long as you can still time it. By the book you would want the shaft aligned correct so that the wires go on the cap where they are shown in the service book but in reality you can but the dist. in anywhere, bring #1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke, pull the cap off and see where the rotor is pointing and thats # 1 on the cap. Just continue the firing order from there. If you have your timing right and your firing order right and it still wont run with that dist. it sure sounds like the dist is bad. Most HEI dist. run with full power to them. Are you going through a resistor?

Go over to the car side and send a PM to Blueskies, he's been running a langdon on his car for 2 or three years. Perhaps his experience can give you some insight.

yep, full power, no resistor, #12 wire. I'll go over to the car side and check there with blueskys. Thanks
