The UPS man dropped a very heavy package on the porch this afternoon. An OD transmission from Neil Riddle. It comes out of a 53 Plymouth. Neil says it's in working order. Looks pretty clean on the outside. It's too dark to take pictures but I will do so soon. I have to muscle it around to the back of the house so I can clean it up with Gunk, etc. I plan to paint it silver. It didn't come with any electrical stuff or a cable so that's stuff I'll be shopping for.

Powerhouse,

You said you took yours apart. How far did you go and do you have any advice if I just wanted to open it up and get a peek inside? I wouldn't mind seeing for myself what the inside looks like before I install it.

Jim,

As of now, I have a few things ahead of my transmission project. I have taken a quick look at Pete's site and I've started reading the manual. But I would like to know how yours goes. As I said, I wouldn't mind opening it up just to see if it's got all its teeth, etc. I'm tempted to go in and replace bearings, etc. but I don't know if I'd just be making unnecessary work for myself. Originally I was just going to bolt it in and hook it up and see what happens.

Joe the most I would do is a quick look on the inside. The couple of these that we are running are untouched originals.

Joe,

That is what I originally did. I just bolted it in. But after reading Pete's account and Normspeed's postings I decided that it would be better to go through it now rather than get the car all assembled and then discover a problem. Pete and Normspeed make it sound do-able what I would otherwise be afraid to do. I hope to get into it this weekend.

When you say you still need to find the "electrical stuff" do you mean the relay, kick-down switch, the governor, the solenoid and the lock-out switch? Or is it just the relay and the kick-down switch that you need and the other things are on your transmission?

I was going to install my OD after a quick cleanup and paintjob too, but it had the wrong input pinion shaft on it. I was told that I could just swap the shaft from my three speed, and would be good to go. When I pulled the cover off of the side, I could see the missing teeth, and the fluid in there smelled like rancid roadkill...

But what I couldn't see, was the clip that holds the freewheeling clutch together, that had come off inside the freehwheeling drum and had been ground up in there. Even if the teeth and fluid had been good, the OD would have failed.

I'm very glad I took the time to go through the whole thing as I now know it will go for many miles and I know exactly what is in there.

Pete
