mpn23748 Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 I am new here I have two old mopars, 1948 plymouth Club Coupe, and 1954 Desoto 4 door sedan S20, both Canadian models. My question is I have fatman drop spindles that I ordered a while back for my 48 Plymouth, that I have decided to install on the 54 Desoto instead, I removed the stock upright and noticed that the fatman upright is 10.5" center to center and the stock upright for the Desoto is 11" 1/8" cneter to center, is there a longer upright from fatmans for the newer 54 or are they supposed to be shorter. Thanks Quote
claybill Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 hey...the idea of lowered spindles is that the 'upright ' has been shortened an inch or so., by cutting and re-welding......the spindle (steering knuckle) remains the same to my knowledge. thismakes the car ride a bit lower. i have a set of stock uprights..like new, for a plymouth....i will trade for the shorter fatmans....if you need longer ones. claybill Quote
PatS.... Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Welcome!!! Nice to have another Albertan on board. How about some pics? There were several slight differences between the "smaller" Plymouths and the "bigger" Chryslers. There is also a very slight difference in the "steering knuckles" or spindles as well. They still interchange and can be used on the Chrysler. I have RustyHopes disc brake kit for my Chrysler and had to use Plymouth spindles. They fit fine and are only slightly different. Quote

mpn23748 Posted January 28, 2008 Author Report Posted January 28, 2008 Marty, they are not the same height, that is my concern, as the stock upright is 11 1/8" center to center and the fatman one is 10.5" center to center, I can get some pics later. thanks Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 my Streamliner book Groupe 2 says the steering knucle support reference 2-03-23 is the same on the 46-48 Plymouth, Dodge, DeSoto and Chrysler.. right....1119642 left......1119643 the steering knuckle that the king pins affix to the support are many and various the difference is length...no footnote to explain... mpn23748 Posted January 28, 2008 Author Report Posted January 28, 2008 here is a picture of the uprights, as you can see the fatman one is shorter, will it work in the place of the longer one, Thanks Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 In reality your question should be directed right back at FATMAN..they are professionals and have engineered their parts and back them all the way. I am sure your question will be answered there completely and more accurately than can anyone here... as i see it with all things being equal in the supension it will be still be equal...spring compression will be increased a tad but your pivot points will still float at all four points Quote
