oldmopar Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Let the the buyer beware. While I had the car up for the exhaust system I slid over to adjust the handbrake it would only hold a little when fully on. Thats when I noticed the the ancor and upper adjustment bolts were missing. Ok easy fix then found 2 of the bolts holding the drive shaft to the trans need to be tightened one only had a few turns on the bolt. Trans looks clean so I am guessing or hoping that it was out for repair or maybe a clutch replace and just did not get tightened. No major problems just thought I would bring it up to remind everyone to check everything before you hit the road you never know what the guy before you did or did'nt do Ed Quote
JerseyHarold Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Ed, You brought up a very good point. I had a similar experience many years ago. Back in the 1980's my friend and I flat-towed a '46 P15 from Wall Township (here on the Jersey Shore) to his home near Buffalo. I told him to pull in to the first service station we found to get the car up on a lift to check it out before pulling it 400 miles. He was reluctant to do so but finally gave in. With the car in the air, we discovered the oil pan was hanging by one bolt and the differential and transmission were bone dry. No telling what would have happened if the rear locked-up at highway speed. He thanked me afterward. Harold Quote
PatS.... Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 We have a check stop twice a year mostly to check larger trucks for mechanical issues. They stopped a brand new Kenworth tandem axle tractor, something they don't normally do as new vehicles are generally OK. This particular one had gotten on the road without a single chassis bolt being torqued...spring shackles...U-bolts...steering box...motor mounts...cab mounts...anything that bolted to the frame. And it had been on the road for a week!!!! Just about have to check everything and take nothing for granted. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Did you check the trans oil level while you were under there? If these other things were left unfinished, I'd be double checking everything. Merle Quote
oldmopar Posted January 28, 2008 Author Report Posted January 28, 2008 I had previously check all that fluids, brakes ect all the standard stuff, the trans and rear were fine. It just made me realize you have to check everything because that was something I normally would not check. Ed Quote
