Lucky444 Posted January 1, 2008 Author Report Posted January 1, 2008 Socks? I thought they were outlawed in Hawaii. LOL! Socks are allowed, but only when the weather here drops down into the frigid 65-75 degree temps!!! Shel Bizzy, thanks for all the photo's and detailed explanations. The pictures really help in seeing what's going on. Yes, that rear drum you have looks exactly like the one on my car. It seems like what I need to do now is start from the beginning again and see if those shoes (front and back) can be properly adjusted. All the info will really help with that. So much for that brake shop I took it too! I'll post again when that gets done and what the outcome is. Big "Mahalo" to everybody for all the info and links. Quote
Lou Earle Posted January 1, 2008 Report Posted January 1, 2008 Before you do a major adjustment or anything else why don't you simply adjust the 4 minor adjustments on each wheel? I am betting the shoes are in good shape- the condition on your car indicates someone took care of it very well. I would almost bet the farm the shoes are good and the drums are OK . Just adjust the minor adjustment per the book before you do anything except one thing ---BUY THE BOOK!!! Then you will have the reference book and that will help u understand your car and be of immeasurable help to the new age mechanics- no automotive technicians aka meter reading kids. Sorry, I get my labels confused sometimes. Quote
greg g Posted January 1, 2008 Report Posted January 1, 2008 If the drums have been off recently, and you can drive the car, you can try the alternative method of looosening the rear drums. Basically you remove the cotter pin, loosen the nut about a turn, put the cotter kee back in and then drive the car around the neighborhood. You will hear a pop when the brum breaks loose from the axle. It will not come off, you will not loos a wheel etc. and as long as you drive slowly back to your work area you will do no damage. Usually do one side at a time. Quote
Normspeed Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 I'm with Lou Earle. (but there are only 2 minor adjusters per wheel). Looking at the car, I'll bet the shoes are probably good. If it sat a long time you might notice some wheel cylinder leakage after some use. Maybe not. But first off I would do the minor adjustments all around. That part is very simple and only takes as long as to get each wheel off the ground for a couple minutes. You would need a jack and at least one jackstand. Email or PM me if you need the quick version. Quote
Lucky444 Posted January 2, 2008 Author Report Posted January 2, 2008 Thank you so much you guys. I'll do the minor adjustments myself soon and see what that does. I'm so glad I posted here and got so much feedback before finding some drums somewhere to purchase. Probably would've been a waste of money. P15-D24.com rules. Quote
Lucky444 Posted January 19, 2008 Author Report Posted January 19, 2008 Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who helped me out with my brake situation. Seems like the shop I took it to didn't give me the straight info. I did the minor adjustments and the pedal feel and braking performance is way better already. Does anyone know of a way to get my hands on one of those brake adjustment tools you guys talked about? Seems like that would really dial them in. Big "mahalo" for straightening things out for me!
