fitzjohn Posted December 24, 2007 Report Posted December 24, 2007 i have a 51' b2b with a 218ci. i am restoring and switching from 6v to 12v, what do i need to do to distributor? which points, condeser, rotor , cap? any help is greatly appreciated..thanks Quote
grey beard Posted December 24, 2007 Report Posted December 24, 2007 Everything you used in your suix volt system is jusf fine - no parts changes will be needed, with the exception of one addiion - a generic ballast resistor needs to be in series between the ignition switch and the coil. Without this, your points will not live long. Additionally, if, like most, your new 12 volt system is negative ground, it works best to turn the two coil primary wires around from the original six volt positi ve position. Then you're all good to go. Lots of luck. Quote
fitzjohn Posted December 24, 2007 Author Report Posted December 24, 2007 thanks for the info, yea, its a 6v pos. grnd and i'm going to 12v neg. grnd Quote
greg g Posted December 24, 2007 Report Posted December 24, 2007 Also your 6 volt starter will bo OK with 12 V. You might want to put a voltage dropper on the heater fan wire, or Just run it at low speed. Jury is out on the gas gage sender. Some say that because it is resistance based, that voltage is a non issue (as is polarity) You also need to swap wire on the posts of the AMp gauge if you are going to retain it. If you are switching to an alt. Easiest way to wire is to disconnect the wire from the Bat terminal of the Voltage Reg, and connect the alt output wire there. Quote
MBF Posted December 27, 2007 Report Posted December 27, 2007 You're definately going to need the resistor for the fuel guage-been there done that-it doesn't like 12 volts. I'd also put a ballast resistor on the heater motor. I'd also go with an internally regulated alternator (that's what I did w my 52 1 ton, and 36 Plymouth) makes things a lot easier and eliminates the points type regulator. Just my 2 cents Mike Quote
billwillard Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 Mike, When are you going to three cents? Bill Quote
MBF Posted December 30, 2007 Report Posted December 30, 2007 Any day now, any day. Going to 3 cents is a 50% increase-not sure what I know is worth that. Mike Quote
grey beard Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 Hey Mike, Is that three Canadian or three Euro? Might need a resistor on my wallet, too . . . . . . Quote
vw4x4111 Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Never use a 6V volt coil with 12V system. I had done this by mistake as a kid. The coil exploded. I could have been killed with the force. Destroided the top of the engine. Eric vw4x4!verizon.net Quote
