Gas Tank Clearance for Exhaust ???

Recommended Posts

Hi all, how much clearance is required from the right side of the gas tank to the spare tire well, in order to run the exhaust tail pipe along the side of it.

The new tank appears to have more clearance in this area;) than the OEM tank, but just want to be sure, as I want to run:cool: 2 inch exhaust pipe along side the gas tank......Thanx Fred

On the instructions that came with my poly tank, they said at least 3 inches of clearance was required. So.....you should have lots of room there. However, don't know the size of your tank, but mine was a little larger than the original tank. Think I only have about 1/2 to 1 inch clearance between the tank the rearend pumpkin. So, you might want to watch that too. I held my tank up using a piece of plywood on top of the floor jack, then the tank to position it. I then drew an outline around the tank using a carpenters pencil to mark the right position before mounting it. You also have to watch for clearance of the filler tube by the spring on the left side. So you have to have to check that too. That's the reason for raising it on the jack first for position.

On my bigbutt coupe I moved the gas tank to the right 4 1/2 inch..I did this very easily by removing the original tank mounts and straps from the vehicle..built a cradle to fit the roignal holes..mount the straps and receiver pieces to the cradle..and then simply mounted the cradle with tank to the car..added a whole 1/8 thickness to the setup..I now have equal distance to run true dual exhaust...

NOW..remember a 41 Bigbutt business coupe had the spare tire behind a curtain aft the drivers seat...no floor well in the trunk..do not despair..I have also done this mod to my 52 Plymouth Club coupe...I removed the half rotted wheelwell, cut and cross hatched a panel, welded it in place..made a spare tire stand to mount the tire at an angle up toward the package tray...the original jack will be in place for show and the scissors jack is out of sight behind the spare tire...the picture shows a tire in place..the tire going there is a factory optional full size spare for a 93 Eagle Vision TSI 225/60/16..nice fit.

Tim, those '47 Chevy tail lights work pretty well on these old MoPars don't

they??? Of course, when I had a 47 Chevy as my first car, I tried to find

something with which to replace those lenses. Never really did, but thought

51 Buicks would look good.

On the maroon 47 P15 convert being worked on locally, the left tailpipe

just barely goes between the tank and spring. About the thickness of

your finger for clearance on each side. At least on the left. Didn't really

look much at the right side. Has an original tank.

Bob..I searched high and low for lights that would go onto the butt once shaved and to match the back up lights (Porsche 356/Renault) units and still be economical..easy to find lenses for and on top of that install without frenching..did not want to french any parts on this ride..these units pictures were new in box..stainless bezels, Blue-dot glass and nicely painted housings..21.00 apiece..how in the name of sam can you go wrong?

PS..I sprayed the inside of the housings with a very reflective silver paint to up the (effective" candlepower of the rear lamps...the high mounted very bright LED unit is a plus)

But besides all that how does it look, the tank straps have an open gap on the back, but the tank is very rigid and tightly in place, should this be okay, ideally I would have the straps tight against the back of the tank also, but it does not move when I reef on it...................Fred

Oh, by the way Tim, if you want rear fender decor for your 54 Plymouth, just get a couple additional hood ornaments..... They seem to fit.
