55 Fargo Posted December 4, 2007 Report Posted December 4, 2007 Hi all, what is the correct way to test the gas gauge, I have it in the dash, there is power to it, but when I hook up alligator leads to the 2 terminals that go to the sender, I get no reading, I hope this gauge is okay, but so far it does not give any reading when tested. Looks like I may go with an aftermarket gas gauge and a single wire universal sender, but would like to use the stock gauge if possible...............Thanx Fred Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted December 4, 2007 Report Posted December 4, 2007 As mentioned in the thread about testing the sender, you need to know if one of the two are good. It could be that your sender is ok and the gage contacts are dirty. The service manual covers that too. You do have to take the gage out of the dash to clean the contacts though. Cleaning the contacts is easy. The manual says to just run a piece of paper between the contacts to clean them. Could be something else wrong with the gage too, however, without a good sender it's hard to test it. If you change to a single wire sender, your gage won't work at all. You'd have to get one out of a 49 vehicle and that would not fit the dash of your 48. Been there, tried that. So..........it's either buy an aftermarket gage and single wire sender or buy a new sender that is correct for your car. By the time you buy both of those, you're at least half way or more to the cost of a new correct sender. Quote
