38plymouth Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 I pulled my front axle and leaf springs out this morning. I seem to have some play in the steering box. I didn't have time to look into it any further to see if there is an adjustment to tighten it up or if it needs a rebuild. I saw in a catalog they offer a rebuild kit, is this something I can do at home without any specialized tools? Quote
greg g Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 Thee is an adjustment that moves the worm gear up and own in relation to the sector or vica versa. You loosen up the large nut in the center of the topof the box, then tighten the sloted screw and retighten the nut. Be caregul you can overtighten it. The other thing to check is the box to frame attachment. The rubber isolators wear out and cause the box to move quite a bit before it begins to move the linkage. Quote
Olddaddy Posted November 30, 2007 Report Posted November 30, 2007 If you do need a rebuild I recommend Harry's Steering Gear in Michigan, 586-296-2920, ask for Sam. They do a nice job. Quote
Phill Powell Posted November 30, 2007 Report Posted November 30, 2007 The worm is shimmed to preload the bearings & there is a adjuster on the top hat to adjust the sector shaft up or down. It's easy to do in the vice. The sector seals leak, so I packed mine with high pressure grease. Quote
38plymouth Posted November 30, 2007 Author Report Posted November 30, 2007 I'm going to try adjusting it as soon as I put everything back together. If that don't work I may attempt a rebuild myself. Quote
