Bingster Posted October 3, 2023 Report Posted October 3, 2023 On my flathead which I am getting ready for another attempt to start, I noticed oil residue at the gasket where the engine exhaust manifold meets the tail pipe leading to the muffler. It must have happened when we cranked the engine last time. Is this a bad sign? Quote
rallyace Posted October 3, 2023 Report Posted October 3, 2023 If the engine has not been cranked over, then there is no way for oil to get to that gasket. If it has been cranked over without starting it is possible that gas has reached that point and been absorbed by the gasket. How tight is the connection? If it is loose then it is very possible that the gas in the charge has leaked past the gasket when cranking. Quote
soth122003 Posted October 3, 2023 Report Posted October 3, 2023 When you tried to start it before, did you have oil in the cylinders? For a wet compression check or a to unstick rings? If so, and it didn't start, it may have pushed the oil into the exhaust manifold and down to the juncture you're talking about. Joe Lee Quote
