mlozier76
Is there an avenue to get parts for the Electric wipers on the D24's? I had some friends pull mine out this weekend while I was putting in the engine and others were modifying my exhaust headers to fit with the dual intake manifold. The wiper motor is an Autolite, but i forgot to take a picture of the model. I had some issues with it sporadically working when I last had the car on the road. I expect that the brushes may be at the end of their life. I didn't want to disassemble it too much until i have a cleaner area to put the parts, as I definitely have a problem with keeping track of projects. I may be able to source some brushes via the local Ace hardware, but beyond that I'll probably be up a creek. I've rebuilt many air wiper motors in the past on class 8 trucks and done a fair amount of electric motors, but it's getting harder to find suppliers for most things that should be able to be rebuilt. Dang throw-away society... enough on that. Any help on a direction to head would be greatly appreciated.
desoto1939
I was at a local swap meet this weekend and purchased a catalog: Maintenance and operation of Autolite electrical equipment. There isa section on Autolite wipers. So i scanned the 9 pages for you to help understand your wiper motor. The catalog also covers Generators, relays and regulators, and starting motors. Lots of great information. I always look for interesting service catalogs and manuals to upgrade my inventory of catalogs to support my 1939 Desoto. Hope this helps with your rebuild. mlozier76
thank you. that looks like it may help. that looks like a really cool find. I'm hoping to score some things like that at the end of the month in Portland at the big one there.
desoto1939
I always look for catalogs and literature when going to swap meets. One year i purchased two McCord gasket catalogs 1926-1936 and 1937-1950. Both were never used and I got each one for $1 each. I see these listed for $50 each and more. I scan the catalogs and have everyone on digital files. Some of my catalogs cover from 1915 to mid 1950's. Rich
JBNeal
I have rebuilt several Autolite wiper motors, and they all seem to have the same problems: degraded conductors, filthy commutators, and dried transmission gear grease. A couple had leaking transmission output shaft seals, and that took some doing to get replaced. I figure I put a bit of labor and about 20 bucks into each rebuild...they ran smooth as silk on 6V...write-up pending me catching up on chores...additional information - wiper motor rebuild issues
