thebelvedereman Posted July 2, 2022 Report Posted July 2, 2022 Does anyone in the group have a 1946- 1948 Chrysler, that could snap a few pictures for me, apparently when they chopped up the radiator support to put in the Chevy drivetrain, they removed the hood latch, I have an original hood latch, and I have a cable, and I know where they go, and basically how they're set up , but I seem to be missing the metal bar/flatstock that goes between the cable and the latch, I'm sure I could Fab one if I had a basic idea of how it goes together, there's not very much room with the radiator being so far forward now, but I think I could make it work, the latch on my dodge, and my Plymouth are both different Quote
thebelvedereman Posted July 2, 2022 Author Report Posted July 2, 2022 Just now, thebelvedereman said: Does anyone in the group have a 1946- 1948 Chrysler, that could snap a few pictures for me, apparently when they chopped up the radiator support to put in the Chevy drivetrain, they removed the hood latch, I have an original hood latch, and I have a cable, and I know where they go, and basically how they're set up , but I seem to be missing the metal bar/flatstock that goes between the cable and the latch, I'm sure I could Fab one if I had a basic idea of how it goes together, there's not very much room with the radiator being so far forward now, but I think I could make it work, the latch on my dodge, and my Plymouth are both different Excuse the crude drawing, but you get the basic idea LOL Quote
harmony Posted July 4, 2022 Report Posted July 4, 2022 I got some pictures for you today. Since you're familiar with the assembly you'll probably understand the pictures while others won't. But if you have any questions just let me know. The bar has a right angle on both ends. on the one end the cable slips through it and that round cable end, with the locking bolt is on the other side and rests up against it. On the other end the spring is attached. In the one picture you can see where it hooks on to the grill. The bar is about 6 inches long and the spring is about 5 inches long in the picture. Quote

Awesome thanks, I had no idea there was a spring on the other side that went to the grill, I thought just the force from the hood closing is what pushed it back into place Quote

The worst thing is you can't really see it working. It's actually a very loose and sloppy set up. But it takes a bit for fiddling around to get it just right. The grab knob and cable under the dash comes out about 6 inches before you feel it release the hood latch. Then that spring gradually pulls the cable back once you let go. If the cable is too tight or too loose the hood won't open. What I did, was use a round rod to simulate the hood catch. I just used a round screwdriver shaft. You have to push pretty hard on it to simulate the hood closing. It's best to have someone in the car working the release knob so you can watch what's going on. If the slot in that bar is slightly bent, or pinched tight or spread loose in one spot, it won't work. It just takes a lot of messing around to get it just right. Have fun Quote
Woodie Posted July 10, 2022 Report Posted July 10, 2022 Wow never knew there was supposed to be that 5 inch spring - mine has been missing probably since almost new. - a picture IS worth a thousand words. Thanks Quote
