Howdy,

I have a 1947 251cid engine that has been running rough for some time and I just haven't done much to correct the issue.  I want to start by checking the timing(firing order is correct).  Can anyone walk me thru on how to go about checking my timing as well as how to adjust it shall it not show 2 degree ATDC?  I don't remember seeing if there is a clear marked on the block and pulley.

Thanks

I was able to take another look at my truck today and it does in fact have a tab off the block.  My problems is that the pulley had markings on it and 90 of it is worn off.  There isn't even notches in the pulley to go off of.  Not sure where to go from here other than to find TDC and work from there.  Thoughts?

Take some fine sandpaper, or a Scothbrite pad and lightly buff the outer edge of the pulley. It’s quite possible that paint, dirt, or rust, is hiding the timing marks. Once you find them highlight the important marks with a white paint pen so they’re easy to see with a timing light.

I used a scotchbrite pad already and all I could find was what looks like an area that is painted in white that is 90% missing.  Not sure if these were the markings that were placed there from the factory or not.  Would you happen to know by chance if the markings were etched into the pulley?  Maybe I need to put a little more elbow grease into it if that's the case or possibly take a pressure washer to it to remove any grime that has worked its way into the grooves.

Yes, I finally found them.  Holy smokes, they are tough to find and read once cleaned up.  I marked TDC and I work from there.  Thanks for the help.
