BobT-47P15 Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 We went for a drive in the P15 Sunday afternoon. I seem to run about 50 mph a lot. But tried to speed up a bit on the two lane highways we traveled. On some of those roads where they had wide paved shoulders, I would pull off every so often as traffic built up behind us. But some places you could not do this....narrow, unpaved shoulders. Did not really see anyone do anything objectionable on this trip. But, i agree that driving these old cars going at slower speeds is a problem and that other drivers can be a pain. Coming onto an interstate and picking up speed to enter traffic flow is all well and good.....but those people need to size up the situation during blastoff. If you are about to come in beside a semi that already has another vehicle on his left and can not move over, then you may have a problem. Sometimes you have to slow down or even stop if traffic is heavy and tight. Around here, our interstates are mostly two lanes with a third entry lane for only a few feet. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 22, 2007 Report Posted October 22, 2007 I've found that when on a freeway with 3 or more lanes per side, it's safer to ride in the center lane. That way, people can still go around you in the left lane and you don't have to put up with people merging onto the freeway from the ramps. I rarely ride the right lane. Quote

I consider that a lot safer than the right most lane. Seems like most of the accidents are due to merging and most merging is onto or off the freeway. And my driving style is mellow enough (I usually allow more than enough time to get where I need to go) that the left lane(s) are going faster than I am. However in the old car I would just be a "road boulder" if I weren't in the right lane. That car, with stock mechanicals like the 4.375:1 rear end, just would be beaten up too much if driven as fast as traffic requires in the left lanes. Now that I thing about it, I guess that "road boulders" are pretty closely related to "left lane lemmings". Quote
55 Fargo Posted October 23, 2007 Author Report Posted October 23, 2007 Bob, it's time to dust of the R10 OD trans, get her in the car, you can then cruise at 65 ,instead of 50 mph, or you can drive at 55 mph with a quieter engine..............Fred Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 I must confess, when driving the 1940 , although I have a 1953 motor it keeps up with traffic well, my problem is the folks that change lanes every other second for no reason. I like the middle lane as well, I find folks coming to close to the car staring at it scares the crap out of me, The 194-0 plymouth goes at 65 with ease:D That just burned my generator bushings however with the new ones I should be good for another 50,000 miles:o Quote
55 Fargo Posted October 23, 2007 Author Report Posted October 23, 2007 Rodney, what gears have you got in the back end, 3.73s or 3.90s............Fred Quote
62rebelP23 Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 testify! i had a kid get the A$$ with me yesterday on the way home; he was hauling ass up the left lane and trying to get in the right lane, passing a line of traffic doing the limit plus. i noticed him jockeying in behind me, then cutting back left and trying to pass AS WE WERE COMING TO A DEAD STOP. i'm sick of trying to be the nice guy with these cretins on the road; screw 'em. i have no patience for this kind of crap anymore; whether i'm driving one of the old cars or one of the new ones. i think a bag of lug nuts is a good deterrence. 55 Fargo Posted October 24, 2007 Author Report Posted October 24, 2007 Easy does it Reb, these pieces of $#@$%^&, are not worth the aggravation.Heck you never know what kind of heat someone is packing thses days. I sympathize with you, but trying to keep a cool head with these morons is sometimes tough, I know. Or worse yet they come up with some old 4X4 with huge push bars and ram our classic cars, and you can't put it past some of these types............Fred Quote
