I finally got around to replacing my speedometer cable last weekend. The old cable was twisted off at the end where it comes out of the transmission. The old cable was stuck in the cable housing had to spray a lot of Blaster to get it out, stretching the cable making it useless for measuring for length.

I made the new cable an inch longer then housing and installed. First road check the needle would go up to speed but stay at that speed when I came to stop sign then start at that speed when leaving stop sign. Loosened nut on back of speedometer needle fell to zero and worked normal. I had a friend follow in his truck and with walkie talkies checked speeds mine was 3 to 5 miles faster then his. Now for the problem next morning I leave to go to a ATHS show and before I went a block the needle has gone completely around to zero and stays remove cable from back needle goes back to zero. Squeezed a tube of graphite in housing no change. If I put the cable in back of speedometer without tightening nut it works normal until cable falls out however even with just a couple of turns on the nut it will just go all the way around to zero.

Sorry for such a long post just trying to give as much info as possible, anyone ever had the same problem.

Sounds to me that your cable is a little too long and when you tighten it up it puts a bind on the internals of the spedo. You say when you loosen, or just place the end into the spedo it works OK. This confirms my suspition. You may need to shorten it up just a bit.

There's a wick on the back of the speedo that is used to lube the internals-you should also make sure that has some oil in it. It looks like a long tube with a flat head screw head on it. Mike

I had checked and oiled the speedometer because when I first took the truck on a road test the odometer would turn but the mph needle would not move. After getting it freed up I then checked cable ad found it was only attached by a couple of threads at the transmission which I broke when I tried to remove.

Thanks

H Suhling, place the tranny cable end into a drill chuck set to low speed and (important going the correct direction) see if the speedo works correctly as you vary the drill speed. If works ok, check the speedo gear in tranny. May be rounded a bit and under normal driving it could twist free from the square opening.

I know this is an old thread but seemed to be the only one when I did a search. My cable is broke right in 2, so how did you go about getting another made? Anoyone have the exatc length down..mine seems to be missing a chunk as well....so many things to find when your laying under the truck swearing at the spring shckle :)

I would think as long as the cable makes clean full radius bends and does not pinch or crimp, it would not matter within reason just how long it is. There must be a supplier somewhere.

Thanks,

Being in Canada I will try and source locally first if possible....just wasn't a 100% on how long to make it but I will take a crack at it and hope for the best
