Well, I took the cap apart.  It appears to be designed to vent both a pressure build up or a vacuum condition.

 

The vacuum side might work but the pressure side either doesn't work or it's set so high it's essentially not capable of venting the pressure.

 

BTW, the reason my above pic of the motorad cap looks like my Delco one is that my cap is a motorad cap that Delco boxed up and sold, lol.

 

So I cut the spring as DJ194950 mentioned.  A pic of that valve apart.

You have the same camshaft as any other engine. The 588 will work, as will any other pump listed for that size engine.
