How difficult is is to put in a new timing chain on a 218 without removing the entire dog house? Remove hood, radiator, fan, slightly raise the engine to remove the front engine mount, remove the drive shaft pulley, remove the cover.

all that done in a hole. Can that be done from below if on a lift?

The crossmember does get in the way. It's worth a try and the radiator removal does give a little more space.

I have done 1949-54  timing chain jobs in the car...

Pull the radiator....remove the fan .... support the front of the engine... remove front engine support mount...jack engine up about 3-4" watch fuel hose to pump ..remove crank pulley and timing cover for access to chain and both gears.

Even though it is possible to change that chain without removing the doghouse, I’m concluding that it be an overall easier project by removing it.
