For about the last 40 years I've used some cotton clothes line cord, about 1/4" in diameter cut to length. Seems like the clothes line cord I've seen recently has a nylon core so I am not sure how good it would be regarding compressibility, etc.

I used a white weather stripping from a local hardware store.  Works perfectly.  Trimmed it in half, stuck the self adhesive side to the glass rim and it’s perfect. 

 

And cheap.

The original gaskets for the reflector type of headlights was generally cork. Steve's Restoration in Portland OR  stocks cork in various thickness's and lengths. I ordered some 1/4 x 1/4 for my '39 Plym from Steve's a couple days ago. $7.50 per pair. Wm.
