casper50 Posted June 27, 2018 Report Posted June 27, 2018 The only diagram that I have that shows the wiring of the clock says that the red is hot and the yellow is ground. The original wires on my clock are yellow and white. It just came back from being cleaned/repaired and if I hook up the wire with the fuse to hot and the other to ground the electric winder mechanism makes a bad noise. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 28, 2018 Report Posted June 28, 2018 it is not polarity conscious as far as battery as it will works either way.....but....do use your meter to determine power verse ground..as the case needs to be the same potential as your car chassis... Quote
casper50 Posted June 28, 2018 Author Report Posted June 28, 2018 I hooked it to a battery on the bench before I installed it this time because it did the same thing the first time he sent it back. If I connect either post to the wire with the fuse built in and the other post to the either the case or the other wire it does the same noise but will eventually wind and start running. I just don't think it's correct to hear that noise and a slight smell coming from it. I'll post a video with sound in a few hours. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 28, 2018 Report Posted June 28, 2018 smell could be oil that has gotten on the contacts...or improperly cleaned by immersion as the contacts can be removed and kept from the solvent...there will be a slamming sound of the winding mechanism as the electromagnet that winds the mechanism is physically moving at a fair amount of speed...I would clean the contacts as any oil here is going to promote fouling of the contact surface and will either carbon and quit making contact or seize the contacts to themselves and cause for constant current drain.. casper50 Posted June 28, 2018 Author Report Posted June 28, 2018 It just came back from cleaning/repair for the second time. I sent it back because of the same issue before. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 28, 2018 Report Posted June 28, 2018 you have chattering contacts...you may not have sufficient contact pressure along with possibility of oil contamination when the mechanism winds down to ensure a solid clean electrical connection.......again clean the contacts and verify contact pressure is sufficient or may I suggest a 8lb sledge when you tap it next time...these clocks are just too simple to fix... casper50 Posted June 28, 2018 Author Report Posted June 28, 2018 I just took it apart to watch it run. When the contacts connect the kick given to the winder is so small that it senses that it need to wind it again. Will check contacts and springs on the winder mechanism. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 28, 2018 Report Posted June 28, 2018 you should get a winding equivalent to approximately 3 minute run time before cycling again... Quote
casper50 Posted June 28, 2018 Author Report Posted June 28, 2018 it's been approximately 45 second wind time. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 28, 2018 Report Posted June 28, 2018 (edited) I hope you are not using a car battery charger for testing...thus the chattering from an unclean AC rippled voltage especially if a 2 amp trickle charger..ensure you a "clean" power supply has enough oomph to do the job when bench testing.... casper50 Posted June 28, 2018 Author Report Posted June 28, 2018 when the points contact everything just sits there. No movement. But I do here a loud click like it's trying to move the winder but not succeeding. Hooked straight to a 6 volt battery. Quote
