Jerry Roberts Posted June 2, 2018 Report Posted June 2, 2018 I found this image of a NOS dip stick exactly like the one on my engine . Note the thick felt gasket that contacts the block . The felt gasket is hollowed out to go over the wide part of the dip stick . 1 Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted June 2, 2018 Author Report Posted June 2, 2018 Here is another image of the gasket Quote
Don Coatney Posted June 2, 2018 Report Posted June 2, 2018 Does that have any effect on the dip stick reading? It appears the dip stick will not go as far into the hole. Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted June 2, 2018 Author Report Posted June 2, 2018 It sure would , but probably not that critical . On my dip stick the flat part above the seal just kind of flops around as I have only a piece of inner tube there for a seal . Quote
Don Coatney Posted June 2, 2018 Report Posted June 2, 2018 The long dip stick in the photo below is for a long block flathead Desoto. As you can see it has. a cup that covers the tube. The other stick is from a P-15 and is naked. 1 Quote
DrDoctor Posted June 2, 2018 Report Posted June 2, 2018 (edited) t The dipstick on our’46 Plymouth looks like the bottom one Don has in his provided photograph, but it has the cup like the top one in the photograph. Hmmmm . . . . . . . I do know the engine in the car isn’t original, but I don’t know just what it’s from. It runs great, and that’s all I’m concerned with. Edited June 2, 2018 by DrDoctor Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted June 2, 2018 Author Report Posted June 2, 2018 The dipstick with the felt seal in the photos that I posted is advertised on ebay as for 1946 - 1948 Plymouth and the part number on it 865299 is said to be for these cars . Quote
Andydodge Posted June 2, 2018 Report Posted June 2, 2018 The 41 Plymouth I had used the longer style dipstick that fitted into a tube that was a press fit into the block, no idea if it was original tho' it certainly appeared so........I would think that the dipsticks would interchange so long as the longer one was used in conjunction with the tube, the short dipstick just fits into the block, no tube...........andyd 1 Quote

Labrauer Posted June 3, 2018 Report Posted June 3, 2018 Well guys we are on a role here tonight I have learned another difference in the dipsticks. On my 48 P15 engine I have the one with the cup in fact both of my 48 cars has the same stick all though the one engine I got from Paul it seems that the stick hits the bottom of the pan just before it covers the end of the dipstick tube. I had no idea that there was such a difference in the length of the two. So which one is the right one to use? Quote

Try different sticks to find out ? You could always start with an empty oil pan , ad the correct amount of oil , then see where it is on the stick . 1 1 Quote
