Is there a "1" at the end of that number? C-38661 is the casting number on my spur gear (non-synchronized) 4 speed. Mine has the Fluid Drive input shaft, but I would imagine that the case is the same on the standard version.

One quick way to tell a spur geared NS tranny from helical cut geared S tranny is to look at the location of the drain plug. A spur gear tranny will have the drain plug facing downward at an angle. The helical cut S tranny will have the drain plug parallel to the bottom of the case.

It takes a lot of talent to drive the straight cut transmissions.  If you need a transmission I would look for one from a 53 or newer

light truck which is synchronized in the top 3 speeds.  Big improvement !
