Hey Pete. I came at my hinge pin mirror with a different approach than welding. Drilled straight down thru the threaded end of a VW hinge pin with a bit large enough for the brass insert on the VW mirror. Then dropped an original pin down thru the hole. These were pins I got off eBay. Had to grind the cap portion a bit smaller in diameter to get it to fit. Then taped up the threads and filled the hole with silver solder. Used a tapered bit to drill down thru the solder to fit the VW mirror brass insert.
it was a bit and a learning process. Went thru a few hinge pins before I got two that would work.
The brazing wasn’t my idea, I had read it in a comment to an older post. Dont remember who it was.
here’s a pic:

I went to my 1939 Desoto parts manual and into the section of Accessory parts. I section 1- they list the various mirror that were optional on the 39 Desoto.

The last mirror that has a factory mopar number is 784788 and is an Outside rear vision left side driver side mirror.  They did not list any mirror for the passenger side.

So if you have a specific parts manual for your car then loo in the accessory section you might discover more information about your car.

I then went to the Section 23-S and this is where they only list the inside mirror that would have been used for all of the 39 Desoto models

Hope this helps and hope everyone has a Happy New Year.  My slogan for 2024 is :

Plan to do more in twenty four.

Thanks Lloyd. When I drove my '38 sedan forty years ago it never had side mirrors and I don't recall pining for them. Different story now ... probably because of the many vehicles driven since that have them as standard equipment now. I feel they are a must have, both sides really.

To answer the original question in this thread, I am not sure for the '39 year mopars but the '38 only had a left or driver's side one and only available for the limousine. Interesting because the frods had them for the early thirties and even earlier.

I will follow PA's advice and mock some up before committing further. Want both sides, want functionality and esthetics. Probably means a convex version for the passenger side as alluded to here.

Will come back with what I finish up with...
