My first biggest problem is once this is posted I don't know how to find it again. I was reading some posts on electrical problems, got some helpful hints, and now don't know how to find where it is posted.

So I'm trying again. I had the generator rebuilt. New voltage regulator. Rewired under the dash and engine compartment. Problem: when I rev up the engine the amp guage pegs at 35... this can't be good. At idle it's at 0. The car runs fine but I worry I'm going to burn something up.

If someone could e-mail me and explain how to find this post again I would be in your debt.

Thank you.

When is this happening? All the time, after starting and running for a bit? Driving down the highway? Does it moderate after driving for half an hour? What happens when you turn on the headlights? High beams? I had a similar problem years back, had to run with my headlights on all the time to keep from cooking the battery. One of our neighbors was an old fellow and he asked why I was running with my lights on all the time. When I told him the symptom, he said he could fix it real simple. Pulled the cover off the VR, did a couple of swipes with a points file throug each of the three sets of contacts, and the problem was solved.

It is not uncommon for the genny to blast full charge at revs after a start up putting back the charge in the battery that the starter just used up, but it should settle down as the battery regains its charge.

Boy do I feel silly. A friend of mine came over and used a very technical technique on the voltage regulator. First he picked up a specialized tool - a big screw driver (I think it was a left handed blade screw driver) - he grabbed the shank and gave the voltage regulator a whack. Don't know how or why but it runs perfect now. Took it out for a ride - 200 miles - what a dream.

thank you for your help and advice.

Sounds like maybe sticking points in the regulator. Perhaps a little gentle cleanup with a points file if they stick again.
