sleepy Posted February 12, 2017 Report Posted February 12, 2017 I am changing the front motor mount plate from industrial lower to car/truck floating. The pan must also be removed so I thought I would by a complete gasket kit. Are there any differences? It's 4 1/4 stroke with no numbers on the pad or casting dates. Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 12, 2017 Report Posted February 12, 2017 A gasket kit for a flathead 6 Chrysler or Desoto will work. Dodge or Plymouth will not. Quote
sleepy Posted February 12, 2017 Author Report Posted February 12, 2017 Ok thanks Don What about rear main gaskets? Where is best place to get gaskets? Napa or VPW Brian Quote
austinsailor Posted February 12, 2017 Report Posted February 12, 2017 Last time I got a set from NAPA they charged me about double what I thought it should have been. Be sure to compare prices before special ordering Quote
Andydodge Posted February 12, 2017 Report Posted February 12, 2017 Although my set from Best gasket was for a 23" Plymouth engine it included both types of rear main seal........I'd check with Best Gasket, Fel Pro or Vintage Power Wagons or similar to see what exactly you get in a set or pull your rear seal out to see what you have...........my original 1941 Plymouth was supposed to be the rope seal, I ordered one yet when I dropped the pan I found a neoprene seal but the previous owner or someone had not installed the small "ears" on either side of the rear seal.......I installed them from the Best set and stopped that leak...........leaked elsewhere but that's a different story.......lol.........andyd Quote
sleepy Posted February 12, 2017 Author Report Posted February 12, 2017 Thanks for the info guys I will shop around. I was wondering about the "best gaskets " Thank you all Brian Quote
Andydodge Posted February 13, 2017 Report Posted February 13, 2017 I found the Best brand set to be quite good and they made the head gasket from steel as I requested as I was using an alloy head........but re your rear main seal.......I'd pull it first to make sure what exactly was there to start with...........and /or what should be there..............lol..........Andyd Quote
classiccarjack Posted February 13, 2017 Report Posted February 13, 2017 I tend to buy a full gasket set. This way I have everything I need and prevent back and forth trips to the parts store. The extra left over gaskets come in handy later down the road. I prefer the "Best" brand. Quote
garbagestate 44 Posted February 14, 2017 Report Posted February 14, 2017 When buying the head gasket, you need to determine if you have an internal or external bypass. The internal has a bulge in the front of the head that bypasses the thermostat.Either one is available, you just have to figure out which one you need. Quote
sleepy Posted February 14, 2017 Author Report Posted February 14, 2017 Andyd I think I will tear it down and see whats in there. You never know what has been done in 60 or so years. It's not like I need it tomorrow I don't even have mounts for engine or trans. Garbagestate Thanks for the heads up I knew the difference but too many days getting up at 3am clouds your thoughts. External I think Thanks guys Quote
classiccarjack Posted February 14, 2017 Report Posted February 14, 2017 What transmission are you planning on using? Quote
sleepy Posted February 14, 2017 Author Report Posted February 14, 2017 Dodge dakota 5 speed ax-15 is what I'm going to use. Quote
